Works OK-ish, but don’t like the look or fit, October 3, 2012

    Where to start…

The “orange peel” look annoys me far too much. That’s a deal killer right there, I don’t care how much it kills glare and fingerprint smudges. And I’m not all that convinced that it helps at all with the glare or smudges, either.

Installation was a real pain – couldn’t get it lined up right. Looking at it now, I don’t think it was cut out evenly – the top opening for the camera/speaker looks like it is too far to the left, and the bottom cutout for the Home button looks too far to the right – but there is a gap on the left edge of the screen, while the right side is right on the edge and is rubbing against the case(which makes the edge of the protector peel up). It took several tries, using a lot of the spray-on liquid they include, to get it on in any kind of manner even beginning to approach centered, no wonder after I noticed that it wasn’t even. And after all those tries, I managed to get some dust UNDER it. Ugh. Oh yeah, and the bubbles are almost impossible to get out – and the orange peel texture makes it that much harder(both to get them out, and to figure out if what you are looking at is really a bubble sometimes).

I will say that the packaging is nice, the instructions are OK-ish, and the little flat spray bottle and rubber squeegee are nice. And the material is certainly very heavy duty, I imagine it would hold up to a lot of abuse. I guess I could call Zagg and see if one of the other models might work better, if the case-friendly version comes in a form that doesn’t have the orange peel texture I might give them another try – but the invisibleSHIELD Original just isn’t worth it IMO.

UPDATE – I found a mall kiosk locally that sells Zagg InvisibleShield, and I had them install the case-friendly HD model. No more orange peel texture, looks a bit better, and the person running the kiosk does the install well(certainly better than me). The cut-out for the home button is centered better, but the earpiece/camera cutout at the top still looks off a bit, but not as bad as the first one. Downside is that you end up with some small bubbles underneath that disappear in a few days. Got it last night, and they are already half gone – but it is certainly annoying. The person at the kiosk also said to avoid using a case for the first day or the edges may peel up. I’d say the HD model gains another 1-1 1/2 stars over the Original model.

I didn’t want to believe the reviews as I had used Zagg for a number of other products and was very satisfied. But…the fit for the Iphone5 is nothing but disappointing. I bought the full face one vs the smaller case version to get full coverage but for some silly reason the edges are not covered by this item. There are gaps on the sides.

The most disappointing is the cutout for the speaker. Amateurish is all I can think of. How hard can it be to stamp out a piece of plastic. Who ever is in charge of quality control at Zagg should be fired.

This is not a good product. I would not recommend this to anyone. The Obliq Xtreme Series – Military Grade protector went on much more cleanly and actually fits my 5s.
