If you are looking for a portable, universal speaker, look no further…, May 7, 2013

My first impression after opening the X-mini UNO was of surprise, it is a very small speaker, light, quite compact and very well designed. The body of the device looks like an accordion that can be put together and secured to make a small ball-like speaker you can carry with you everywhere! (important to note though, that while closed, the speaker will not work) ** EDIT: While the instructions suggest that the device will not work if closed, it actually does. Thought it was worth clarifying.

So it looks good and it is practical, how does it perform? My expectation for a speaker this size wasn’t really that high, I wanted something I could use in my office where I normally can’t listen to music at a high volume. I was pleasantly surprised by the potency of such a small device, while testing it I had people come over who liked the way it sounded and they could not believe it when I showed them the speaker, audiophiles may not be surprised by it but believe me when I tell you the sound that comes of it is pretty good. The bass expansion system seems to make a big difference.

The device has a built in AUX cable, which is a nice thing so you don’t have to worry about carrying a cable should you need to move around with it, it can be found at the bottom part of the device, you remove it and plug whatever device you want to listen to. This is great as a problem I currently have with my iPhone/iPod speakers is that since the iPhone5 changed the connector at the bottom, all the devices I own that have a connector designed for iPhone4 and below, were rendered useless. The mini UNO resolves that problem by depending only on AUX entries. Additional to the built in cable, there is an AUX input should you need it, this was great as I have the audio from my desktop and into the mini UNO via the AUX cable. It can also be used to connect multiple miniUNO devices for an improved sound experience. There is of course an On/Off switch and a volume button.

The only downside I can think of is that it cannot be battery powered, which makes sense as the idea seems to be to make this as portable as possible and batteries would definitely have resulted in a much larger device. Included in the box is a cable you plug into the miniUNO and into the computer to charge the battery. Also included are a small pouch to keep your miniUNO, the instructions manual and a sticker.

If you are looking for a portable, universal speaker at an affordable price, look no further, the miniUNO can be used with pretty much any device that uses an AUX cable and the quality of the sound that comes from it is just unbelievable for a device this size.

X-mini’s are a good thing in this world. It seems like everybody these days puts out small, portable speakers to amplify smartphone or tablet audio. But the ratio of trash in the sub-$40 range is almost 1/1. It’s quite simply very hard to get decent sound out of such a small package. But the X-minis have been doing that since their inception. I had one of the X-mini IIs a couple of years ago. It was all-plastic, black ABS and very similar in style to this speaker. The sound was loud for the size, almost unbelievably so, and quite tolerable when you kept in mind its limitations.

The UNO is an evolution of that speaker, basically the same to look at, but with better materials and innards. The base of the speaker is now metal, keeping it in place a little better when the volume really vibrates the thing. The battery life is much better, and the new ceramic driver produces very crisp, detailed sound. Instruments and vocals are especially nice. Bass is still lacking, but there is no way such a small speaker could produce much more of it than this guy does, not with current tech at least.

Like the other X-minis, the polish and presentation is excellent, with nicely finished plastic and metal, and excellent packaging, a microfiber cloth pouch and charge/linking cable. Basically, it seems like I had to have spent at least twice as much as this speaker goes for. Just say no to all those other small, dismal-sounding toys that fall apart immediately, and say yes to the only company out there I know of which produces tiny speakers worth owning!

I’ve been on a quest to get a good replacement speaker for my laptop computer because the speakers that came with it provide a really tinny sound. I tend to use my laptop on my actual laptop, so a pair of desktop speakers wouldn’t work.

I like this X-mini UNO speaker for a number of reasons. It is small – when in its closed state it can fit in the palm of my hand. The sound is good – for its size, it does a good job of giving a fair account of the highs and lows in a piece of music. It’s USB/line-in cord is actually long enough so that I can put it nearby instead of perching it on the laptop itself. I’ve found that to be a problem with a lot of the single mini-speakers – the assumption that the laptop is going to be used on a tabletop.

It’s also well-designed. The speaker expands and contracts easily, and locks closed with a simple twist. It has an on-off switch and a separate volume switch. Underneath the speaker is a short RCA plug that allows you to daisy-chain the speakers if you have more than one of them. The USB/line-in cord has a velcro-tie-up pre-attached. The supplied carry-bag is large enough to fit everything and had a locking pull-cord on the top. The bottom of the speaker has rubber grips so that it will stay in place.

In addition to my laptop, I’ve tried it with my cell phone to boost its speaker capability and it works well. I can use it with my Sony PRS-T1 ereader to play audiobooks out loud. It’s small size means that I can throw it in my pocketbook or my computer case without weighing either down.

I’m glad that I got this speaker to test; it’s turning out to be a really useful item for me.

Hear Bose sound before you bash it, December 26, 2008

This review is from: Bose SoundDock Series II 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Speaker Dock (Black) (Electronics)

I did quite a bit of research before getting the Bose SoundDock II. I wanted a dock that would work with my iPod touch 2G, have superb sound quality, and preferably charge my iPod while docked. Well I have to say that I got all i wanted and then some with this unit.

I read some reviews online written by “audiophiles” and supposed “sound experts” bashing Bose for selling overpriced and underpowered equipment. These people just don’t get it. I won’t go on to bore you in detail about the ridiculous things that were said but I will mention that these people are comparing the SoundDock to a home stereo setup that entails having a receiver with two separate wired speakers. Is this a fair comparison? I beg to differ.

To summarize this product it’s a compact unit you can have in virtually any room in the house minus a bathroom (for safety purposes) and its sound can be described as warm and beautiful with deep enough bass to make your sound come alive but not wake the neighbors. Clear, never distorted at any volume. You get what you pay for.

    Thanks Bose!

A great way to play your tunes easily., January 23, 2009

This review is from: Bose SoundDock Series II 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Speaker Dock (Black) (Electronics)

The Bose SoundDock has the Bose quality sound you would expect. It is a great way to play your IPOD, just plug it into the dock and play. You do not have any control over bass and treble, just volume. The remote has a good feel to it and responds well. There is a small green light in the dock that lights up each time you press a remote button. You will usually use the remote to change the volume, select the next or previous track and turn it on/off. The SoundDock itself only has 2 buttons for volume up and down.
The volume goes louder than I expected and I never have turned it up all the way, even when the kids are playing their IPODs.

There are a few things they could have improved……The power cord has the transformer built into the middle of the cord, it should have been built into the unit. The power cord plugs straight into the back of the SoundDock with a small round plug and it will come out easily if the unit is moved. The docking station is a seperate piece that is attached and it moves around a little which makes it feel loose. There isn’t an on/off switch on the unit, just the remote, so you have to turn the IPOD off or use the remote to turn them both off, or just pull the IPOD out. My SoundDock was missing one of the stick on rubber feet on the bottom. I called Bose support and they mailed me one free.

Overall it’s a great quality unit where it counts but Bose cut corners where they could on the rest of it.

We do love it and use it almost everyday.

SoundDock II works with AirTunes!, August 25, 2009

Have the 1st Bose SoundDock for 2 older iPods. When bought new iPhone 3GS, bought the new Bose SoundDock II. Excellent sound! Fills 2300 sqft house fully, plus the yard. Rich clear music. Can get very loud, impressive. Kept my iPhone on it for a couple months, then discovered AirTunes, the Apple way of wirelessly turning every speaker in the house into broadcasting station for iTunes playlists and radio etc. AWESOME !!! Just buy an AirPort Express and connect it to the SoundDock II via Belkin Mini-Stereo Cable and you can stream all your playlists / songs to this great speaker PLUS all your other speakers in every room of your house, all at once, individually, or in selected groups. The roof is about to fly off with the volume of intensely great music raising the rafters here!

Then your iPhone is free to use as a Remote, free Apple app, to control your music on all speakers. Heaven! Have a long kirtan / mantra / bhajan playlist and having it going all throughout the house and yard for hours (actually days) non-stop is an amazing boon.

The Bose SoundDock II is expensive but we are very glad we bought it. It is getting a workout now along with all our other systems / speakers, all at once. Plus, we can take the Bose out on the deck, or to the office.
