Learn from my follies: Tips for keeping your Shuffle dry and your earbuds/case from moving, July 12, 2013

I’ve had several Interval units dating back to the H2O original and I may have finally figured out how not to short out my Shuffle and not stop every 25 meters to move the case around on my head or put the earbuds back in. Here’s what I’ve learned (with apologies for how long this post is):
    1. Only open the case when both you and it are dry. I open it to turn the Shuffle on in the locker room and off when I get to my car. I use the play/pause button while wet.
    2. When you close it, press firmly at both on both the top and bottom and make sure you hear it click. You should not be able to open it by just pulling on the lid with one finger.
    3. If you have long hair and tie it back while swimming, position the bun either very high or low. Then position the strap with the case attached right in the middle.
    4. Cap-wise, bigger is better. My silicone Speedos are the smallest in my bag and do not work nearly as well as my novelty ones from Sporti. And oddly enough, old-school latex works better than silicone, period. It’s less prone to slippage. (In the summer or in a really humid natatorium, a light-colored latex cap also has the added benefit of keeping your head slightly cooler.)
    5. Play around with the different-sized earbuds while you’re dry and figure out which move around the least in your ear. It’s a pain to pull them off and put the on with wet hands.
    6. One you’ve got the unit on, pull the ends of the cap down so they cover the top half of the earbuds rather than completely. Then tuck the excess wiring inside the back of the cap.
    7. For obvious reasons, the earbuds stay in place best when your head is still and your arms are stationary. So you’ll have less trouble while doing kick sets, streamlined dolphin kicking, breaststroke and even backstroke.
    8. The Interval is actually a good training device for backstrokers because if you move your head or your stroke crosses over too much, the earbuds will fall out from being jostled by your biceps and you’ll know you’re doing it wrong. Here’s a great balance/concentration drill that doubles as a warmdown set: Put your earbuds in and then fill/empty a water bottle so it is 1/4 full. Push the top down so it doesn’t take on more water. Then lie back in the water and balance the bottle on your forehead. Start out doing streamlined kick on your back and once you are properly balanced on the surface, start stroking, slowly and steadily while trying not to knock over the water bottle. Do this drill a few times per week with the eventual goal of making it at least a full 25 without losing the bottle or your earbuds. If you want to build up to 50s or higher, just do open turns or take the bottle off your head when you reach the flags, do a flipturn while holding it in your hand, then put it back on your head when you resurface.

Love it, makes my lap swimming a great experience.
    Time disappears…..
Piece of advice, the songs need to be louder.
In iTunes select the songs, right click on info or command + i and go to the last tab, it will allow to boost the audio level of any track selected.
Push it, u will need the volume.

Flooded and Can’t Return; Destroyed New Shuffle, December 9, 2013

I listened to my new Shuffle one time using the X-1 and loved it. The next time I used it (without opening it between uses), it flooded and destroyed the Shuffle I used only once! When I tried to return it, the return date had passed (I purchased it only one month prior).
