Nice case, too many flaws, November 1, 2013

I upgraded from my iPad 3 to my iPad Air today and decided to get the Targus VersaVu case as I have been very happy with the one for my iPad 3. I have only had it for a few hours, but am most likely going to return it. Let’s start with the good, seems to be a well built case, very slim line, holds the iPad in securely. Now on to the bad. The replaced the rotating mechanism from the previous generation case which use to leave a hold for the Apple logo to show through with a solid cover now. The effect is not only not showing the logo, but the hole that used to be there also served as a good finger hold to hold the case while carrying it. As another reviewer stated, they replaced the old strap that used to hold the case closed with a glorified hair band and terrible groove that is incredibly difficult to get the band to stay in to close the case. The speaker openings don’t line up properly on the bottom of the case thus partically covering some of the holes for the speakers. The grooves that hold the iPad upright don’t run the width of the case thus not holding the iPad upright as securely as I would like. And last, and to me this is a big one, no magnetic shut off so when you close the case, the iPad doesn’t turn off. Overall, a major step back from the previous version.

When less is more, October 29, 2013

I received this case today and was at first disappointed. I paid extra money for this? Then I grabbed my old 4th gen case to compare. The quality was every bit as good but why did it seem like I got nothing for something? Then it hit me. Apple went to a great deal of effort to remove 1/3 of the weight of the 4th gen iPad. What I was looking at was a case, probably 1/2 the weight of the previous case, to compliment the lighter iPad.

Yes, less was more. So I took a good look at it. My major complaint with my old case was that it would often pop out of the slots. Even with the weight of my old iPad and case it stayed in place even when I pushed on it. Why? The grooves didn’t look any deeper. To my delight I discovered that Targus had added a small, unnoticable ridge on the edge of the back. This delightful little ridge grabbed the groove making it very difficult to pop out

And finally, instead of the bulky swivel that allows the iPad to change position from landscape to portrait, this is a much lighter swivel that works very well. Again, less is more.

I am not a techie. I am over 65 and live on my s.s. I do not have to pinch every penny but do need to get value when I spend my money. I am glad my initial disappointment turned into admiration for this nicely engineered case. For those of you that notice that the date of this review is prior to the date that the iPad Air goes on sale, good for you. So, yes, my final approval will rest on how it actually works once the iPad is in place. But I wanted to have it on hand when the new iPad arrived and I wanted those of you who are thinking along these same lines to know that so far, so good.

UPDATE. I received my iPad Air today and have been using it in my Targus case. I have not noticed any of the problems found by other reviewers except the lack of the magnet for auto shutoff. I am especially pleased at the way the tablet remains in the groove even when I tap or push on the top of the screen. Failure to do this was a major irritant with my previous case.

If I have any complaint at all it is with the “less is more” feature. It is a very nicely functioning case and well made. But luxurious it is not, apparently to keep the weight down. Previously I used a seperate book stand to keep my tablet in an acceptable position for reading and writing. Now all I need is the case. This is a good trade off for me.

Do not buy – too many problems, November 7, 2013

Sending it back. iPad falls over backwards when put in the third slot. iPad can be easily pushed back when in any of the slots because the slots are not deep enough. Small strap used to keep it closed is too small to use easily. No magnetic on/off. The case covers up part of the speakers. The case they made for the iPad 3 was great. This one is terrible considering the expensive price. Do not buy this case!
