Snugg keyboard big hit at faculty meeting, July 19, 2012

I bought my Snugg keyboard case after seeing a similar product at a conference. I brought it to a meeting and all my coworkers were fawning all over it!

    – It matches the white iPad best.
    – It is USB rechargeable and it powers down when not in use even when turned on, but if you keep typing it will still catch everything you wrote (yay bluetooth).
    – the iPad is gently held in place by gravity when the keyboard is in use so no wear and tear

    Lost 1 star because:
    – No place for a stylus.
    – Keyboard keys are rubber and I prefer a firmer keyboard.

I presume both of these were to preserve a slim form factor for the case, so I can’t fault them too much. Great product at a good price. I have and will recommend it to friends.

So Far, So Good!, September 6, 2012

I was a bit nervous, buying something with so few reviews, but I liked what I read

Even though I wasn’t looking for a case, the keyboard covers the iPad nicely and it all fits in the Targus A7 slip case I bought here.

The rest of the review was composed with the keyboard in an Elements file and copied to the clipboard:

I’m disappointed that the space bar is so low it’s hard to depress. Something to get used to.

I’m disappointed the right shift key is small, but I understand why the arrow keys made it necessary.

I’m delighted to finally have arrow keys!

I’m pleased the backspace is in the right location and large, because I often need it.

The ALT keys have the word “Option” on them. There are two keys that have an “X” made from circles on them. They also have the word “Command” on them. I have no idea what these do.

A nice feature is the top row of keys, which have all manner of special functions: Home screen, Search, Brightness, Slideshow, Sleep, and Multimedia Controls.

March 22, 2013: I purchased this item last September, and it worked fine until last month. After a few weeks I used the online chat at Snugg’s website to report the death of the keyboard. The representative told me they had made some improvements, and she wanted to send me a replacement at no charge. I am now delighted to once again have this excellent accessory for my iPad. The physical construction seems the same, so perhaps the changes are electronic.

Before I got the Snugg, I tried a Kensington KeyFolio Pro 2 keyboard. The Snugg is better in every way. The main thing I like is that it is much thinner and lighter, but I also like typing on the Snugg more. It’s also less expensive.

Versatile iPad Dock, Shop Around, April 26, 2010

Short summary: I’ve had this dock at my bedside for a week or so and I am happy with it, but I would not pay a premium over list price for it.

If you have an iPad, you will want a dock. The long charging period for a completely discharged iPad–several hours–means it will be spending a fair amount of time hooked up to the wall and it’s nice if it can do something useful then. You should probably get in the habit of putting it in its dock while you sleep. if nothing else you can use the iPad as an expensive photo frame and music player. If the dock is on your desk, then this dock is definitely the way to go as it will make text entry much less stressful–I would not say much faster, as I can type nearly as fast on an iPad virtual keyboard as on a physical keyboard but it takes much more of my concentration to avoid errors, and my hand position is often awkward on the virtual keyboard. Even if the dock is at your bedside, like mine, the keyboard is still useful as I can sit up to dash off quick notes, and also access the line of specialized buttons along the top row to control the device.

The keyboard portion of the dock will work with some iDevices running iOS 4. For example, my 2nd generation iPod Touch works, while my iPhone 3G does not. The docks audio out feature does work with the iDevices I’ve tried and sounds great. The iPhone 4 will not fit in this dock due to its square profile.

Things to watch out for: You can’t use the dock and the Apple branded iPad case. I’d recommend getting another case, as I do not like the Apple one, too bulky and hard to access the controls–I use a lovely Gelaskin to protect against scratches. The dock does not come with a charger module. You will have to buy a separate 10W charger or use the one which came with your iPad. The dock’s audio out is a line out, which means you cannot control volume from either the iPad or the dock, it will have to be controlled by the sound output device you choose: I have a nice 2.1 powered speaker system with a little twist volume remote. The dock sets the iPad in portrait orientation, so you will not be able to use the full screen size for video playback. There is no mouse support and mice make no sense in the iPad’s GUI, so you will have to get in the habit of going from the keyboard to the screen for direct manipulation.

An alternative would be to acquire a simpler dock and a Bluetooth keyboard. This might be more flexible and would allow you to type in your lap while in bed.

Great keyboard but there is a bit of snag in design, June 21, 2010

    The Good:
    It works as advertised.

The Bad (depending your point of view)
    – The connector is not long enough to connect iPad with most soft or hard cases. (you could purchase a speck hardshell which has a slit for the dock which in case this would not be a problem)
    – The iPad essentially rests on the dock when connected without any clamps. So if it’s tilted slightly to the left or right it will not make the right connection to work.

My recommendation is to get a cookbook stand and Bluetooth wireless keyboard because it’s vastly more useful. I do want to point out that the wireless keyboard was not build for the iPad so there is one key missing from the wireless which is the home key. That suprising became one my most pushed keys when I used the dock- but still prefered the wireless.

    Great Keyboard!, June 28, 2010

April 7, 2011 edited to add: The price has dropped since I’ve done this review. It is no longer $90.00.

I’m new to apple products. I just recently bought the iPad and wanted the option of having a regular keyboard……I have to say that this keyboard is awesome! It’s not wireless however it also works as a dock. Your iPad charges while connected to it. The only thing that I noticed was that it didn’t have a backspace button but I’m not sure whether or not all Apple keyboards have a backspace button because I’m not that familiar with the Apple line of products. I’m used to having a backspace button as well as a delete button and this keyboard only has a delete button so you basically have to move the cursor to avoid deleting the information that you want other than that the keyboard works fine. The only other thing is that your iPad stands completely vertical. There is no way to tilt it so if you’re use to being able to tilt a screen for added comfort, you’re not able to do that with this keyboard. It takes a bit of getting used to. You also have to use the iPad’s original USB cable to connect it.

$90.00 is a little steep for this product. I didn’t pay nearly this much for it and I got it brand new. This is marked up really high. Best buy has it for $69.99 and I got mine a little cheaper than that on my local military installation.
