However, the USB ports are not powered, so can’t sync and power up iPhone, iPad,iPod, etc. as I was hoping from reading the entry in amazon

I was searching to expand the USB ports for my older iMac which just doesn’t have enough USB ports. I found some that were cheaper but didn’t look too cool next to my iMac and one that did look good enough had poor reviews. This one looks just right and works right. The connector is the right length and the unit has material on the bottom to keep it from sliding on the desktop. The only (minor) complaint is that the USB ports are upside down, but I can get over that.

I like this Satechi hub quite a bit. It plugs into my 30″ cinema display connected to my Mac Pro tower, and the look of the hub fits the hardware. I use the hub primarily to connect multiple USB keys (iLoks, ignition key, eLicenser) related to music production software. These dongles do not require significant power, so I can’t comment on it’s ability to power and charge devices. It is a far better solution than I had, since it allows me to have the dongles in plain sight while freeing up “prime” USB ports on the tower.
