Works great, documentation is lacking, August 1, 2013

I was very close to giving this a 1-star review. I followed the documentation to the letter and I couldn’t get it to pair. There was no troubleshooting guide in either the manual or online. And the only online support was by email. So 24 hours in, I still didn’t have it paired with my iPhone, iPad or Mac.

But then I figured out that the documentation is wrong. Where it says, “press the Connect button – The LED will blink blue indicating that it is in pairing mode.” it should say, “press and hold the connect button until the LED blinks blue twice indicating that it is in pairing mode.” With this simple change to the manual, everything would have worked perfectly the first time.

This is a 5-star product that loses a star for poor documentation and substandard support options.

It works…but not as of November 2013, January 12, 2013

I bought this device to use my IPad when I teach. Yes, I could use a long lightening cord to control Keynote but that seems clumsy. This device will work with Keynote on an IPad but users must temporarily change the IPad general settings to make this device work. The setting changes are quite simple once you get the hang of it but the clarity of the device instructions needs improvement. I found that the easiest way to set up the IPad for use with the device is to open the Keynote presentation in full screen mode and then use the IPad home key to adjust the VoiceOver setting in the IPad settings. While the device has a Presentation setting, IPad users must use the Accessibility setting to enable the device to move from slide to slide in Keynote. While I have not used this device much (it just arrived), I wasn’t able to get my presentation out of full-screen mode without restoring the IPad settings. I’ll check on this and update this post.
If Apple would like its tablets to compete with laptops and Keynote to compete with PowerPoint, you would think that they would amend Keynote and/or the IPad to use a Bluetooth based handheld like the Logitech pointer. Instead, Apple touts a ridiculous Keynote app that enables users to use another io6 device as a pointer. Instead of using a $30 device, I can use my $500 iPhone or a $200+ IPod for presentations.
Bottom line, while this device has uses beyond Keynote presentations on an Ipad, it is a clunky approach. Still, it works and seems to be the best option to meet my objectives at his writing (Jan 2013).

    Update on November 2013
This device does not work with updated Keynote and updated Apple O/S 1.07. Satechi tech support confirmed to me that they are working on a fix with Apple. There is no firm date for the fix.

Works with Keynote on iPad and Macbook Air, December 6, 2012

I was not sure if Satechi Smart Pointer would work with my iPad, but I ordered it anyway – and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality and design. The pictures really don’t do it justice, black finish with chrome bezel looks elegant. It has also integrated laser pointer which makes this device even cooler.
I tried the remote with Keynote on both iPad and Macbook Air. It works well with both of them. The manual needed some more information, but Satechi Customer Service was nice enough to answer all my questions.

For Keynote on iPad, you need to switch the remote to Accessibility mode. You also need to activate Voiceover on iPad in order for the buttons to work. Easier way to do this is to select Triple-click Home: Voiceover in accessibility settings on iPad. Now, you can activate the Voiceover by pushing the home button 3 times. Once I learned that, I am getting my keynote ready first and then go into Voiceover to start my presentation.

The multimedia and presentation modes are pretty straight forward. Multimedia media mode works with both iPad and Macbook Air, while the presentation mode only works with Mac. As an added bonus, presentation mode works with XMBC on Macbook Air as well. Great!

Overall, I think that Satechi Smart Pointer is well worth the money. There has been some times that I used it all day with my iPad – while at work doing presentation, in the car listening to music, and at home streaming music to the receiver via airplay.
