    Customer Video Review Length:: 5:37 Mins

    This battery powered and rechargeable speaker is an excellent item for carrying with you to enhance the volume and enjoyment of listing to your music, podcasts, or audio books. I love its size as it is easy to toss into a backpack or suit case and yet its sound output and quality is astonishing. I have attached a video of the product for your review.

    The product’s design is just beautiful and I love how it opens and closes for portability. The acoustics are very good and they are enhanced by the built in base chamber that enhances and emphasizes the bass output of the music through its resonation capabilities. Multiple speakers can be linked together to enhance the sound. The speaker is smaller than a tennis ball at 2 ½ inches in diameter and two inches tall when closed. It weighs in at 3 3/8 ounces and it is 2 ¾ inches tall when opened.

    This product is priced right and the quality makes it an ideal gift for someone who loves their portable device and likes to listen to music for example. I was certainly impressed with it when I played a multitude of different songs and even listened to an audio book. I tested the device with my iPhone, iPad 2, iPad 3 and my Kindle Fire and the results were all good.

    You can connect the speaker to any device that has a 3.5mm audio jack such as an Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod, Amazon Kindles, electronic tablets, mobile phone, laptop or computer.

    Here are the technical details and the included accessories list:
    * Works with any device that has a 3.5 mm audio output jack
    * Produces clear, loud sound with deep bass response – 3 Watt output
    * 10 hours of audio playback from a single charge
    * Integrated 3.5mm audio cable
    * USB charging cable supplied as standard that is also an audio input cable
    * It comes with an audio extension cable 31.5 inches long
    * Carrying bag included for the speaker and the accessories
    * User manual
    * Extra spare feet

    I rate this product as a 5 star item and I recommend it to you.

    I received a sample of the product for test and evaluation and I promised to give a fair and honest review. The music played in the video is a non-copyrighted version of the National Anthem played by the US Navy Band.

    How can a little speaker, smaller than the average orange or apple you would find at a grocery store, have decent bass sound? Conventional wisdom tells us that for good bass, big speakers are needed. It’s something that we’ve all heard before, yet there’s something new to be learned every day.

    The Rokono BASS+ Mini Speaker is barely the size of a plum, hardly 2½ in diameter, but the sound that comes out of it is a genuine surprise. Already knew that some small portable speakers could produce reasonable sound when one was working on the computer, as I already had a set of Chill Pill Mobile Speakers, but the Rokono product (its name is taken from the phrase ‘Rock On!’) was surprising with the overall richness and clarity of it’s sound.

    Likes:

    + Very compact and portable; about 2½” in diameter x 2″ high when closed
    + Rich, full sound; rated at 280Hz-16kHz, but that sounds conservative
    + Solid ABS housing; sturdy, yet it weighs under 3½” ounces
    + Rechargeable Lithium battery; charged by USB cable, lasts about 10 hours,
    + 40mm vertical thrust speaker; 3 watts RMS output
    + Linking; can be daisy-chained to other Rokono BASS+ mini speakers
    + No additional accessories needed

    Dislikes:

    – None so far; none anticipated

    First Impressions:

    Taking it out of the easy to open box, one finds the Rokono BASS+ mini speaker, a weather resistant travel bag, a USB charging cable, an audio extension cable that measures 31½ inches, an instruction manual, and a spare set of little rubber feet for the speaker itself. It’s all nicely packaged, and the instruction manual is clear and easy to follow.

    Plugged the mini speaker to charge it, and a small LED under the base glowed red while it was being charged. When it was fully charged, the LED turned to blue. It has a matte black ABS housing, and has a standard 3.5mm audio plug that fits the jack of almost any computer, MP3 player, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire or tablet that you might imagine. To operate the mini speaker, you simply turn the ridged center ring counter-clockwise and the main part pops up. Plug it into the audio jack of your device, turn the power switch on and it’s ready to play your music. This is a monaural speaker; it blends the left and right channels into one, and is good for general listening, especially when working at the computer.

    Audio Listening:

    I tried the Rokono BASS+ Mini Speaker with a variety of different types of music styles: vocals, classical, hard rock, tracks from the new and the old, along with a few YouTube music videos. It all sounded far better than one would expect from a speaker of this size. I tested this mini speaker on my Windows 7 notebook PC with customization and equalization as needed, then on the MacBook Pro, and later running them “flat” as a comparison, with no audio boost.

    My musical tastes are quite eclectic, and within a few hours, I had played a wide range of tracks, selections from Adele, Leonard Cohen, Whitney Houston, Tom Waits, Regina Spektor, Paolo Conte, Five for Fighting, Al Jarreau, Buckwheat Zydeco, Carl Orff’s O Fortuna (Carmina Burana), Amy Winehouse, The B52s, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Enya, Quynh Anh, Pachelbel’s Canon in D and more.

    The sounds were clear and accurate, and the ‘transparency’ throughout the frequency range resulted in decent delineating of instruments and voices. It was easy to hear the fingers sliding on acoustic guitar strings, the light whoosh of a flute, the brassy notes of a trombone, the distant tinkle of a softy struck triangle at the back of the stage, the rich boom of kettle drums, and the glisten and afterglow of a brushed cymbal. Bass sounds are important to most of us listeners, as it’s the rhythmic underpinning of much music, and in this mini speaker did not disappoint. Fading tails of sound decaying away in all ranges are easily distinguishable and followed to its silence. Spatial clues and sound reflections are accurate, such as naturally recorded hall ambiance and fingers going down a keyboard.

    But I had to test this mini speaker to a higher standard, using an album that I’ve used over the years to test larger home speakers and sub-woofers, an album that to many audiophiles is the ‘gold standard’ for testing the capabilities of speakers, a pure digital (DDD) CD that’s been around since the ’70s. The album is Time Warp, but I strongly suggest that if you get it, read the reviews first and follow the advice of those who say to be conservative and turn your volume very low. This album has been known to make your tweeters turn to a dying squawk, and to deteriorate the foam surround on your bass speakers and…

    Sometimes I think marketers get away from themselves when describing their products–too much of an oversell leads to high expectations. While a cool little speaker, the MonsterBass Mini Speaker (not to be confused with, and not associated with, Monster cables, as far as I know) is limited by size and capacity. This isn’t going to give you room-filling sound, and isn’t a substitute for a decent set of real speakers.

    But it fills a niche, and for that niche it may be the best speaker I have tried.

    The niche in this case is portability. It’s tiny. It has brilliant engendering. Everything you need is collapsed into a minuscule little ball a little larger than a ping pong ball. The ball twists and opens up like a concertina, and from there it is just plug and play. You get a nice sound that is considerably louder than an iPod or iPhone on its own (although not much louder than a decent set of computer speakers. I tried it on my laptop and the sound was only marginally louder, and distorted at high volumes). As promised, there is a nice bass boost that was surprising given the size.

    And it looks cool. Can’t let that important fact slip by unnoticed. The “MonsterBass Mini-Speaker” looks like piece of cool Sc Fi future-tech. And it comes with a handy little traveling case that also looks cool. So you have that.

    One of my favorite things about the “MonsterBass Mini-Speaker” is its internal battery. It plugs into the wall and holds about a 10 hour charge. I haven’t run it continuously to check it out, but it holds its charge well and has lasted a long time during test trials. Having this internal battery adds to its portability; no need to fuss around with extra batteries and worry if you have the right amount in the right size.

    The “MonsterBass Mini-Speaker” has become my default iPod camping speaker. I love having music when I am out camping, and I own a few different iPod docks that I used. But with those I always run up against the battery issue–one battery going down can put the kibosh on music for the entire weekend. And none of them can compete with the Mini-speaker in terms of size and portability.
