I already have 2 other USB card readers. The Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1 and I also have the AmazonBasics 21-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader. Both of these are significantly larger than this Plugable card reader. But size isn’t everything as I soon learned.

The Plugable card reader has a permanently attached USB cable, 4 inches long. For my use alongside my laptop, it’s the perfect length. If you wanted to use this with a tower you might need to use a USB extension cable for convenience.

I don’t worry too much about the speed of these devices but I was curious nonetheless to see how this little reader would stack up against the other two readers that I had. I was completely surprised by my little test.

I had a file 929.3MB in size. I copied the file to a 16GB PNY micro-SDHC card and measured the time it took to copy the file to the card from my desktop and then how long it took to copy the file back to my desktop. I ran this test on my several year old iMac with USB 2.0 ports and also on my mid-2012 MBP with USB 3.0 ports.

I won’t bore you with a spreadsheet of numbers but in each test on both computers, the Plugable card reader bested both of the two other card readers.

The Kingston reader was the slowest, taking 62 seconds for the file to transfer to the card and 45 seconds to transfer the same file back to the desktop.
The Amazon Basics reader took 58 seconds for the file to transfer to the card and 45 seconds to transfer the file back to the desktop.
The Plugable reader took just 50 seconds for the file to transfer to the card and 44 seconds to transfer the file back to the desktop.

As a further test, I was curious whether I could transfer a file from a micro-SD card inserted in the reader to an SD card also inserted in the reader. The answer is no.

I like that the USB plug is permanently attached. That’s one less thing I have to worry about losing or misplacing.

The price is right on this memory card reader. It performs well and is very small in size. It’s earned its place in my computer tool chest.

I have multiple cameras and use all types of different memory sticks in our home and I love this small and portable card reader. It will work with SD cards, Micro SD cards and Sony Memory Stick cards. In addition to owning cameras we have a lot of digital photo frames that we use and we are always updating the photos on the memory sticks to add the newest photos. I made a short video of the card reader for your review.
This reader is great in that it simply takes a USB 2.0 or 1.1 port on your computer or laptop and you are in business transferring files to your computer or to the memory stick. I used it with everything from a 128 MB Memory Stick to a 64 GIG SD card without any issues. I like that the pig tail USB connector is short and that makes it easy to carry but it is also long enough get the card reader away from the back of the computer so you have room to work and plug the memories in easily.

The card reader is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac OS X and Linux. This is a very good accessory and I rated it as a 5 star product. I recommend it to you as a good buy as it works well and it is priced properly.

I received a sample of the product for review and testing and I promised to provide a fair and honest review.

If your desktop or notebook computer does not have a memory card reader, you will not find a more convenient one than this. This little USB 2.0 card reader is nicely made, inexpensive, and SMALL. It handles SD, SDHC, Micro SD and MS/Pro cards (I am not familiar with that one) which means that it will handle any card I own excepting CF cards. This unit is small enough to slip into a computer case or whatnot, and works well. A nice little device! RJB.
