Prefix vs. Defender Comparison, May 4, 2013
    By

I have both the Defender and Prefix, and give a slight nod to the Defender. The Prefix is a one-piece unit made of hard rubber, with a built-in skeleton of even more rigid rubber. If you drop it from a height of 5 feet, your iPod won’t be damaged at all, neither will this case. Both cases are hard to find in stores, so don’t waste your time looking for them other than online.

The Prefix comes with a dry-install screen protector, which I like. The problem is that the one-piece Prefix and its snug fit make it hard to install without damaging the edges of the screen protector. Ultimately, it’s why I decided to use the Defender and allow my Prefix to sit on a shelf unused. I’m willing to shell out an extra $20 to Zagg for an Invisible Shield HD (I want my screen to look perfect) and don’t want any wrinkled corners. It’s too bad no one makes a case-friendly HD screen protector for the iPod Touch 5g, otherwise this would be my favorite case, even over the Defender.

PRICE: The Prefix is $15 cheaper, roughly $25 compared to $40 for the Defender (manufacturer list prices, usually cheaper on Amazon).

PROTECTION: The Defender wins, but the Prefix is more than sturdy enough to protect against drops, unless you drop it from a 3-story building. If it falls out of your pocket or off a table, both cases will protect the iTouch.

FOOTPRINT: The Prefix is a tad smaller, enough to really feel the difference, which is a big plus for me. It helps bring back the slim feel of the iTouch.

SUMMARY: I wanted to use the Prefix, but as mentioned earlier, the difficulty installing without damaging the screen protector made me ultimately keep the Defender and not use the Prefix. If you don’t use any screen protector, I would recommend the Prefix over the Defender since it’s a slimmer profile and feels better in my hand. Otherwise, stick with the Defender.

Best protection for IPod Touch 5!, April 27, 2013

I have read many reviews of IPod Touch 5 protectors and they all have short comings. The OtterBox Prefix fits perfectly, is easy to put on AND allows you to use the Tech Armour IPod Touch 5 HD clear screen protector. This is the BEST combination giving you great protection for the body of the IPod Touch and screen yet allowing perfect touch of the icons on the screen.

The OtterBox Prefix Series Hybrid Case is a good case for the TG iPod Touch. It’s a one piece case that offers moderate protection. It fits well, and has cutouts for all the iPod Touch’s features and accessories except the wrist strap. A new lanyard come with it though, and attaches to the case. The case is solid and fairly lightweight. It does add noticeable thickness to the Touch, but there’s not much you can do about that if you desire decent protection. The case also includes a self adhesive screen protector. Since I hate screen protectors, and have no desire to use it, I left it in the box.

All in all, I like OtterBox Prefix Series Hybrid Case. It does what it is supposed to do, and doesn’t cost a lot. It does takes some time getting used to the extra thickness and weight. On a positive note, the extra thickness actually makes the Touch easier to hold. I recommend it.
