Decent but not even close to the iceKey, November 13, 2006

When my iceKey (another, better, keyboard by MacAlly) started to fail (4yrs old), I looked around for a suitable replacement. I noticed that MacAlly came out with another slim, low profile keyboard and thought I’d give it a try. It also didn’t hurt that the iKeySlim was half the price of the iceKey.

Overall, the iKeySlim is a decent keyboard but it doesn’t compare to the iceKey. The keys feel cheap (actually, the entire keyboard felt cheap and light) and you have to press pretty darn hard to type anything. It’s also a little bit larger than the iceKey.

I’d recommed buying the iceKey over the iKeySlim if you’re looking for a low profile keyboard. It may cost more but it’s hands down, the better keyboard.

Good features, bad feel, September 9, 2006

When my five year old Apple keyboard finally started to die, I began to look around for another keyboard. I’m not overly crazy about the newer Apple keyboards due to the grooves in them and how they love to collect dirt and junk, and they are also very susceptible to spills. So I looked around for another keyboard which still offered many of the features my Gigabit PowerMac came with. I was looking for a keyboard with the volume and eject buttons, and if it came with a power button, that would really be the icing on it all! After doin some research, I discovered the Macally ikeyslim keyboard. It looked good, it had the three volume buttons, an eject button, and evn a power button! So, on paper, this keyboard looks great.

However, I have found a few quirks. The feel of the keyboard is off for me, and I find myself often “missing” the G and T at the end of words, and my typin accuracy has gone down. The misspellings in this review are intentional to show the problems I have been having with this keyboard. Ultimately, this is my only real gripe, but considering that typing is a keyboard’s main function, this causes a large problem.

Another thing which is a little difficult to get used to is the placement of the volume and eject keys, which are placed on a row on the top of the keyboard, which requires a little more arm movement thank just slightly moving my hand from the mouse to press the volume/eject keys like on the Apple Pro keyboards. This, is just a minor quibble, and not a real problem.

There is a power button on this keyboard, but it unfortunately cannot boot up older Macs like the early USB Apple keyboards could do. It can pull up a Restart/Sleep/Shut Down dialog if you press it, which is a great feature.

As one person noticed, Amazon lists this keyboard as weighing 17 pounds. This is wrong, it weighs 1.7 pounds, not 17 pounds. This is an issue that Amazon should correct. Otherwise, it makes this keyboard very expensive due to the shipping.

This keyboard had a lot of promise, but due to the odd feel to the kyboard, I am going to replace this keyboard with either another Apple Pro Keyboard or a Matias Tacticle Pro keyboard.

I bought this keyboard as a replacement based on some reviews read, and really wasn’t sure whether I’d like it. Turned out to be a great buy as I really like the light touch needed on the keys. Obviously, the feel of a keyboard is rather personal and subjective, and your preferences could be a bit different, but I found it very comfortable and easy to adjust to. Furthermore, it’s a full mac keyboard complete with the f-keys, etc, and at around $23 including shipping it is a great value. I liked it so much I bought another one for use at home. Great buy overall.
