Metallic zipper too tight, and may scratch Macbook corners., November 7, 2014

Really wanted to like it, but did not. Not going to return it, but not sure if I would use it.

(P.S. Gigacity_amn seller/store has very good service, by the way. I didn’t request a return, since it seems to be my own “preference” issue. But they read the view and emailed me to offer to replace the one I bought. That’s GOOD service. Can trust.)

The overall color is a lighter brown than the picture, so it looks less like aged-leather-book, and more like a pretend-fake-leather. That’s not a problem though, since it’ll most likely stay inside a briefcase. The real problem is the metal zipper (versus soft plastic zipper that comes with most cases). It does not feel smooth or easy. A really rough feel for the zipper. It’s very sharp (both the zipper line and the zipper itself). This can be a problem because the case is very “snug” fit around the laptop. The fit is so snug that, when you lay the laptop in it, the corner of the laptop and the corner of the case almost overlap, with the laptop sticking out just a bit. I feel like I have to be extra careful zipping the macbook inside, because it seems a very likely scenario that a rough zip-up action would scratch the metallic zipper on the corners of the macbook. I just don’t want a case where I have to tip-toe around. I want it to be quick-in, quick-out. Again, nothing against the vendor here … just the product itself doesn’t feel very comfortable around the macbook air 13″.

Exquisitely beautiful MacBook protection, November 28, 2014
    By
Dolphin (Stuck inside a cloud) –

With the look of an antique leather-bound atlas, this protective case really impresses. When I was offered the chance to try one out for review purposes, I did not hesitate. Up close, the PU leather (in other words, synthetic) is a bit too smooth to pass for the real thing, but the stitching, finishing and the strong metal zip closure are all very well done, and the gold embossing is really lovely. The case is rigid, lined with a suede-like material which protects the laptop from scratches and contact marks, but is not really padded and so retains a very slim profile.

The fit is snug but correct for a 13” MacBook Air (or a MacBook Pro) with two clear plastic corner strips securing the top (screen) half and reasonably strong elastic for the keyboard base. It’s not the most secure attachment in the world but perfectly adequate to keep cover and computer together. There is an identical case available for the Pro Retina, so make sure you buy the correct one for your Mac.

The great selling point about this case (apart from its original and elegant appearance) is that you don’t need to remove it to use your Mac. Just open the two-way zip, and set up your laptop as usual. The zip fabric allows access to the side ports for peripherals. This is a specialized cover that will protect your Mac in transit and any time you use it but it will not accommodate any accessories, as there are no side pockets. Still, at this price point, it’s a gorgeous case that I just love looking at.

Love it! It even fits with my spec case on my macbook pro 13in. It’s snug but it’s a perfect fit. Other reviewers were scared it might scratch the corner of the laptop but with the speck case over it, I have no worries! It was a big snug when I was just testing it out, but once I put the corners under the elastics, there was no struggle closing and opening. It does have that weird fake smell but it’s not offensive or overwhelming. Plus, it looks like a planner or schedule book more than a laptop case. Very convincingly deceptive!

    LOVE.

The texture from the “carbon fiber” skin is nice. That said, this skin is essentially a large vinyl type sticker. That’s not really a bad thing. The adhesive is strong and at the same time, doesn’t leave residue. The material used for the carbon fiber texture feels strong enough and seems like it could take some scratches without damaging the Macbook underneath.

Installation wasn’t too bad. It’s a dry install (meaning water is not required to smooth out bubbles) – and because the skin is an opaque skin – you don’t have to worry about getting tiny pieces of dust underneath (though you should still try to keep it at a minimum). I’ve performed my share of wet install skins, and this one was easier than most of the wet installs. The skin is also pretty thick compared to wet install 3M transparent skins, so getting it on and smoothing it out is, in my opinion, easier.

So – from the above – you might be wondering why I only gave it two stars? The fit is awful. This is a rigid skin – not like the wet install transparent skins where you can stretch it a little.

The top skin isn’t fitted well to the lid. Where there is nearly no room for error on the top or bottom of the lid skin, the sides have a little too much room.

Which is okay compared to the bottom skin. The bottom is so misaligned that several holes are covered half way which makes them un-serviceable.

After, I looked at some video reviews and notice others had the same problem. The skin is just cut poorly.

Before anyone asks, yes I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 15 with Retina display that this skin was made for.

To summarize, this is a nice quality skin, but the fit is poor.

Love this Carbon Fiber Skin, November 26, 2012

I love this skin. It took me about 5 min to install and though I am a surgeon and perhaps this sort of thing comes easier to me I had none of the problems getting it aligned that some people mentioned above. If you hold it taut and “let it down evenly” onto your MBP while looking through the cut-outs at the 1) Apple (for Top), 2) Rubber Feet/Screws (for Bottom), and 3) Trackpad (for Wrist Rest) then you can get the alignment pretty quickly and cleanly w/out a lot of fuss. If the cut-out looks pretty good let a little bit more down to stick and then see how you’re lined up along the upper edge. It THAT looks good then let the rest fly and smooth out the bubbles w/your fingers. The first couple attempts (try the Top first, it is easiest) I had trouble but the skin peels right off if you don’t let the whole thing stick down immediately and I got the hang pretty easily after redoing it once or twice. No residue on Mac! Mine seemed cut nearly perfectly for the 15″ MBP Retina.

It makes for a more secure grip while carting around and using the MBP and it doesn’t slip out of my open bag anymore. It looks highly professional, not cheap and I’m very happy I got it (though I wish I had purchased on Amazon for the lower price).

Nice but it comes with a frustration factor…., March 6, 2013

For appearance and overall “cool” factor after I got it installed – I give it 5 stars, it really does look great.

That said, for the money I spent I would expect a LOT better fit. Like many of those who left negative feedback on this product, the fit SUCKS. Prepare to be frustrated. The bottom holes are off just enough to make it impossible to line everything up – I ended up trimming the large holes for the feet with an x-acto knife, all the while trying not to scratch the case with it, just to get the film to fit around the feet. I got it after much pain.

The top, while better, had its issues as well – it was just slightly too big in depth (front to back) and just slighty too small in width – so the edge of the film comes right up to the edge of the top and back of the laptop, but width-wise there is a 1/8″ gap on both sides. Go figure ?

Obviously the engineers who designed the dies did not account for shrinkage over time, or just dropped the ball whatever the case, they could do a lot better. Again, for $40 for a sheet of plastic, I would expect MUCH better quality assurance and fit.

I should make it clear that installation would have been a breeze had the product been cut correctly , but due to the fitment, I had to take it off / put it back on several times and wrestle with it to make it fit right.

The inner “hand guard” fit perfectly, so apparently they are capable of getting something right.

Despite the hassle of dealing with the fit issues, once installed the skin looks stunning. If it were not for the fitment issues, I would definitely rate this 5 stars.

Maybe BodyGardz actually reads reviews and will make corrective action.

I’d say buy it, but be prepared to have patience and diligence in installing it.
