I bought these headphones to replace the standard white earbuds that came with my ipod. I’m very satisfied with them, especially for the price. I like the cord length – not so long that it gets in the way but not so short that you can’t listen to your ipod while it’s in your pocket/purse/backpack. They start to irritate my ears after a while, but not nearly as much as the old ipod earbuds did. Sound quality is great. Overall, these are a fantastic buy!

    A Fantastic Apple Substitute, February 8, 2012

I listen to books on my iPod Nano, before that the 2nd a generation iPod, and before that a big old clunky Archos. In the 15-year span, I’ve gone through a lot of ear buds, which admittedly get a lot of hard use. Until now, the Apple ear buds were the gold standard, i.e., that by which all others are measured.

When my last set of Apple ear buds went dead in one ear, I searched for an Apple replacement online, but could find nothing for the second generation Nano. So I went to the oxymoronic store known as Best Buy. I found no Apple replacement, but I did note the JVC Gumy ear buds. Needing instant gratification, I shelled out $10, knowing that I was over-paying. Still, the price is way below what Apple charges.

When I tried the JVC ear buds for the first time I listen to some of my music so as to better assess the sound quality. And here’s the thing, in short, I was amazed by the sound quality of JVC. It was, in my opinion, better than Apple, though I had nothing for direct comparison, at least for stereo comparison. I did try my Bose $300 noise-canceling headset, and there was less distortion at full volume with the JVC product.

Also, the slip collar on the JVC is a little looser, which reduces the tension put on the wires when slip collar is used. I’m guessing that the continual pulling on the delicate ear bud wires over a long period of time cause stretching and ultimately the separation of the conduction connection inside the wire. In general, if a set lasts a year, I’m pleased. I’ve been using the JVC for over three months, and they still work great. Even if they only last six months, I’m money ahead, vis-à-vis the Apple product.

I picked up a pair of these JVC Gumy Earbuds in Coconut White in a local store for $6.88 on sale. They are about the same size/form-factor as the original Apple earbuds with the exception of they are actually slightly better form fitting to the ear canal. I hardly know they are there. I wear them in the office and they pretty much block out all the distracting ambient noises and conversations, and I can listen at a low volume. The sound is excellent on low volume with plenty of head room to go much louder. They are not “tinny”, but rather warm and full sounding and the base response is quite nice. Others have said that the chords transfer noise to the earbuds, but it is only noticeable when the music is turned off. The chord is not as pretty as Apple’s single, round chord (it is two affixed side-by-side chords typical of cheaper headphones), but the chord seems tough enough. In fact I forgot them in a shirt pocket and they went through both the washer and dryer, and while the cord was twisted in places, the headphones still work perfectly! For the price I paid I plan on picking up another set as a backup.
