The Vault Slim by Silk isn’t all that bad. Here’s some observations, October 4, 2014

This is my 3rd iPhone 6 wallet case to own since the release of the iPhone 6. Yes, I should have my own website reviewing wallet cases. Avoid the Spigen wallet case…it’s a joke and a piece of junk.

The Vault Slim by Silk isn’t all that bad. Here’s some observations:

    • It has about as slim as a profile as you can get while still allowing room for 3 cards and maybe a couple of folded bills.
    • Access to the lightening port is great too. Even cables with fat ends can plug right in.
    • Finish is matte black, so fingerprints aren’t a problem.
    • Overall fit of the case around the phone isn’t that tight. Experience leads me to believe that in about a month or so the case will become loose around the phone. “Soft” case materials tend to loosen up over time.
    • Area around the camera lens and flash is quite large and could actually allow the back of the phone to be scratched in the right conditions. Unless I’m missing something, there’s no reason to allow this much exposure on the back.
    • Getting cards in and out is pretty easy. Pushing a card out tends to cause the card underneath it to come about half-way out as well.
    • If you shake the phone pretty good, the cards will start working their way out.

I previously used the Incipio wallet case on an iPhone 5S (the version where the case opens up near the lightening port) and so I expected for Incipio to have something similar for the iPhone 6 launch. That was a pretty good case and I’m hoping they produce one for the iPhone 6.

I’m going to give the Vault Slim a try for a few more days to see if it wins me over from the Prodigee Undercover case. I give the Prodigee Undercover wallet case 4 stars because it has just a large of a footprint as the Vault Slim, fits the phone extremely well, and has an awesome (hidden) spring-loaded tray that pops out with your cards (up to 3). Yes, it complete hides the fact you have a wallet case at all and I like that. Better yet, no one can tell your cards are right there (unlike the Vault Slim) and the Prodigee keeps them completely enclosed so they can’t work their way out of the phone. I didn’t think I would care for the Prodigee case, but after having it for about a week, it’s a slick little piece of engineering that just works, looks good, and offers solid protection. You can find it here […]

So right now, I think the Vault Slim is the second best option out there after the Prodigee Undercover. Both are easily the top 2 available options out there right now.

I bought this case because Speck does not have a smart flex case for the Iphone 6. I’ve used the speck case on my Iphone 5 for almost 2 years and really liked it. This case is very similar to the Speck case for less than half the price. The material for the vault case is a little smoother than the Speck, and I must say that I’m not a fan of the open space around the camera and flash. If Speck had a case like this and it was priced the same I would probably go with the Speck, but as I said the speck case cost twice as much. I think this is a great product for a great price.

I come to this case from the speck smartflex case for iphone 5, which I liked. This Silk case has a similar overall design (matte exterior, soft tpu material, card slot on back). While I would say the external finishing is a little less nice than the old Speck, I am impressed with the case after using it for a few days. Here are a few positives I did not know when I ordered.

    1) By pushing the credit cards a little out of their slot, you can easily make the iphone standable on its side (kind of like a kickstand, but more vertical), which is nice for video viewing. This is not possible with most iphone 6 cases, as the phone itself has rounded sides

    2) This case has a compact feel. I enjoyed using the slim iphone 6 without a case as it fit my hand. Another wallet case I used added significant bulk, however. This Silk case adds very little to the sides of the phone, and the tapered back makes it fit the hand better. Also, the ID slot on back gives you a place where you can grip firmly, making the phone much less slippery.

One negative about the case is that it has large buttons for power and volume, which makes those controls easier to press, sometimes accidentally. These buttons are smaller on other cases. This drawback plus the finishing gets the case 4 stars.
