Thin, protective, lots of power: excellent iPhone 6 battery case, October 25, 2014

This review is from: iPhone 6 Battery Case, Trianium Atomic S iPhone 6 Battery Case (4.7 Inches) [Black/Black] – 3100mAh External Protective iPhone 6 Charger Case / iPhone 6 Charging Case Extended Backup Battery Pack Cover Case Fit with Any Version of Apple iPhone 6 (a.k.a iPhone 6 Battery Pack / iPhone 6 Power Case / iPhone 6 USB Juice Bank / iPhone 6 Battery Charger) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I have owned many battery cases for my previous iPhones (3Gs, 4 and 5) and by now I know where to look for design flaws. The biggest problems I’ve encountered before:
    – complete lack of screen protection (you need a lip around the sides so that the screen is protected in case of a fall)
    – parts that separate and fly away if you drop the case
    – case makes it hard to take the phone in and out, and it doesn’t pass USB through so you can’t sync without taking out the phone
    – complicated charging patterns that always leave you with an uncharged phone and/or battery
    – fragile microUSB connector
    – insufficient clearing of camera/flash area ruining flash pictures with reflections and halos
    – insufficient battery capacity
    – non-compliant Lightning connector causing the display of incompatible cable error messages
    – excessive bulk

I’m pleased to report that the Trianium case passes all my criteria with flying colors.
    – It’s incredibly thin, especially considering its capacity
    – It’s capable of providing a full charge to the iPhone 6
    – The two part bumper design is clever, unique and protects the phone well
    – It provides USB pass-through so you can sync while the phone is in the case
    – The camera/flash area is given plenty of clearance and flash pictures look fine
    – The rubbery black matte finish is pleasant to the touch and grippy
    – Works with iOS 8.1

The case comes with a USB to microUSB cable, as well as a headphones extension pigtail (in case your headphone plug is too big to fit the small hole at the bottom of the case)

The Trianium is not only an excellent protective case, but it’s also well engineered, thin, and holds a large amount of juice for the power hungry iPhone 6. Very highly recommended.

Review of the Trianium Atomic S Battery Case in Black for the iPhone 6

If you are anything like me, I get extremely excited to receive a package!

I received the Trianium Atomic S Battery case for the iPhone 6 in a silver bubble wrap that protected the case very well.

    Kudos to the shipping department!

I posted a lot of pictures of the product with space grey and white iPhone 6! The size differences and more!
    Check them out!

    Onwards to the Review!

    Quick Version:

Pros: Great Battery Life, Protective Case, Sync Through the Case, Raised Lip for a lay on the table design, Tactile Buttons, Does not interfere with camera and flash functionality, and Slimmer than my Otter Box!

Cons: Slight Speaker Audio Distortion past 80% volume

“Whatever”: When charging the case, it charges the phone first then the case, the soft black material is a fingerprint magnet for oily fingers, You have to use the headphone extension/adapter to use the headphone jack, and non-included wall charger to charge the case (you can always use your Apple wall charger)

    In Depth Version:

    The Packaging:
The Trianium Atomic S Battery Case comes in very stylish orange and white box. Trianium claims on the box that it provides a “Protective Bumper”, “Doubles Battery Life”, “Sync through the Case”, “3100mAh Battery”. Furthermore, the box provides an informative diagram of the case for the iPhone 6 (such as button placements and various features). Kudos to the marketing team for providing a stylish yet informative box.

    Inside the Packaging:
Opening the top two plastic safety seals on the box reveals a plastic shell housing the following: an Headphone Extension/Adapter Cable, Micro USB Charging/Syncing Cable, User’s Manual, and of course, the Trianium Atomic S Battery case itself. I do want to commend Trianium for the well thought out user’s manual. It provides information to what is included with the packaging, how to install the battery case, how to use the battery case, charging specifications, frequently asked questions, benefits, and warnings and warranty information.

Here is the specifications of the Trianium Atomic S Battery Case (as listed in the user’s manual).
    Battery Type: Li-polymer
    Capacity: 3.7V/3100mAh
    Input: DC 5V/1A (Max)
    Output: DC 5V/1A
    Dimensions: 152.7*70.9*15.5 mm

Utilizing the Trianium Atomic S Battery Case:

Wow! Holding the Atomic S Battery case in the hand feels great! The black model comes with a soft touch material that does not make the phone slippery. I do; however, have to note that since it is black and the material is soft, it is a fingerprint magnet!

Installing the battery case was a breeze. As mention in the User’s manual, lift the bumper surrounding the case, gently slide the phone onto the lighting connector of the case, and snap the bumper back on the case.
*Do NOTE that it needs to snap into place*
I recommend you listen for the snap and visually inspect that it is leveled on there and in place!

Using the case to charge your phone is as easy as holding the power button on the back of the case for 2 seconds and releasing it! Repeat the process to turn it off! There are 4 LED indicators in the back that indicate how much power you have in the battery pack.
Information on LEDs and Power in the Case
4 Lit up LEDS: The Battery Pack has 75-100% Power Remaining
3 Lit Up LEDs: The Battery Pack has 50-75% Power Remaining
2 Lit Up LEDs: The Battery Pack has 25-50% Power Remaining
1 Lit Up LED: The Battery Pack has 1-25% Power Remaining

The case provides a lay on the table design with a raised lip that does not interfere with my plastic screen protector. The buttons are AWESOME ON THIS CASE. Tactile feedback is definitely there on the volume rocker and power button. There is a cut out for the silent switch. It is noted that the cut out makes the button recessed; however, there is no problem accessing it even with short nails like mine.

I tested the phone for any possible microphone muting and speaker audio muting problems. I am glad to say all my callers can hear me loud and clear! Furthermore, the speaker seemed perfectly fine up till about 80% max volume. I noticed at 80% volume or higher, there was a slight distortion or echoing of the speaker audio. When I mean SLIGHT, you really really REALLY have to be listening for it. As with most battery cases, you have to use a headphone extension/adapter to access the headphone jack. I find it a pain in the butt to use an extension but that is just me being lazy.

I also had the chance to test out the camera with flash and the various sensors on the phone. The cut out for the camera is nice and wide and does…

Fully charges a dead phone but won’t let you charge just the case when phone is installed, December 8, 2014
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: iPhone 6 Battery Case, Trianium Atomic S iPhone 6 Battery Case (4.7 Inches) [Black/Black] – 3100mAh External Protective iPhone 6 Charger Case / iPhone 6 Charging Case Extended Backup Battery Pack Cover Case Fit with Any Version of Apple iPhone 6 (a.k.a iPhone 6 Battery Pack / iPhone 6 Power Case / iPhone 6 USB Juice Bank / iPhone 6 Battery Charger) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
    Pros:
–The case charged my fully dead iPhone 6 to 100% with a little bit left over. The phone was lightly used during charging. Considering that lithium ion batteries typically improve in performance after several charge/discharge cycles, this is promising. So far I have only used it to charge my phone once, as I’ve only had the case a few days.
–The case feels beefy enough to protect the phone from damage in a drop. The lip comes up past the glass as well.

    Cons:
–Charges the phone when the case is plugged in, which can’t be disabled. I’m a battery Nazi–I like to let my devices (even lithium ion ones) fully discharge before charging them. With the iBattz charging case I had for my 5S and the New Trent charging case for my 4S, I could plug in the case (with the phone inside) and I could press the power button on the case to cause it to not charge the phone and just charge the case. Pressing the power button on the Trianium case does not disable charging the phone. My level of Nazi-ism has caused me to deduct 1.5 stars for this.
–As others have mentioned, the case trim ring doesn’t fully seat to the base in the lower left hand corner. This isn’t a big deal, just a minor annoyance. This resulted in a deduction of 0.5 stars.
–My Trianium has been stuck on 2 out of 4 LEDs for several days. On Friday night, I plugged in the completely-dead case with my mostly-full phone inside. The following morning, the phone was 100% but the Trianium only indicated 2 out of 4 LEDs solid, with number 3 flashing. That night, I plugged in just the case, but the following morning, the case was still stuck on 2 out of 4 LEDs. I brought it to work with me today and it’s been plugged in (without the phone) for 4 hours and still on 2 out of 4 LEDs. I’ll see if it will fully charge my phone after it dies–maybe the battery status indicator isn’t reading correctly. No deduction for this until I determine if my unit is working properly or not.

    Other thoughts:
–This is subjective, but the iPhone 6 feels large in my hands without a case. (I generally wear size XL or XXL gloves–I’m 6’4″ and have hands that are proportional to my height.) With the Trianium case installed, the phone feels “too big”. I’ve ordered a clear case and will probably leave my phone in that unless I need the charging ability of the case.
–Also subjective, the rubber material of the trim ring is “too grippy”. It takes a fair amount of effort to get the phone to slide out of my Cellet holster, and there’s no way I could do it quickly enough to answer a call.

There are apparently only two designs of iPhone 6 charging cases on the market now–one that have a base and a trim ring that encircles the entire phone, and one that have a clip that just goes over the top of the phone. The prices for both designs vary greatly despite no significantly apparent external differences–the reason I bought the Trianium for ~$60 instead of one of the cheaper ones is that I figured the cheaper ones saved money by using crappy batteries. I avoided the design that has the clip over the top of the phone because in the past, I’ve had problems with it pulling off when I’d attempt to pull my phone out of its holster.

UPDATE 12/10/14: Despite showing only two LEDs of battery, the Trianium case took my dead phone to 98% before running out of juice. A subsequent overnight charge of the Trianium left it with just two LEDs again. I’m not sure if the status LEDs are at fault or if the Trianium’s battery isn’t reaching a high-enough voltage to light the last two LEDs. iBattz and i-Blason both have charging cases due out in the next month or two. I’m going to send back the Trianium, switch to a $10 protective case and then look into one of the alternatives once they become available.
