Actually Fits MacBook Pro!, September 1, 2011

I decided to add an SSD to my mid-2010 13″ MacBook Pro. I didn’t want to shell out $200+ for an SSD with decent capacity, so I decided to swap out my SuperDrive for the OEM HDD.

I read the reviews of the other hard drive caddies not specifically designed for the MBP. The general feedback for those products was 1) you needed to pry off a piece of plastic to get it to fit in the MBP and 2) there’s nothing securing the caddy to the case. Folks were generally OK with all that because those products were a fraction of the price of an OptiBay or Data Doubler. I decided to give this product a try (for a couple of dollars more than the generic caddies), and I’m glad I did!

This caddy actually fits the MBP! I mounted the HDD to the caddy using the screw holes underneath the HDD and the included screws. I needed to transfer a small bracket from the SuperDrive to the caddy. Once that was done, I reassembled my MBP with the caddy using the same screws and screw holes that the SuperDrive used. The only exceptions were two screws along the MBP case edge where I needed to use the slightly longer screws that came with the caddy instead of the originals. Everything worked out like a charm!

    ***Update Nov 2012***
As you might have heard, Apple introduced a feature called Fusion Drive that automatically (automagically?) manages your data between an SSD and an HDD to maximize performance. An internet user was apparently able to tweak this feature in Mountain Lion to work with our aftermarket SSD + HDD setups. NOTE: I do not know this person, and I have not tried this myself. I am just posting this link here in case others are curious.

    Worked Perfectly, November 30, 2011

I ordered this caddy a day after my SSD. The SSD shipped from (Newegg) CA to AZ and the caddy shipped from NY to AZ. They both arrived on the same day: So impressive shipping time.

There’s really not much to say other than this caddy fit perfectly in place of an optical drive in an early 2009 17″ Macbook Pro. No cutting, trimming, or other mods. It just worked. I spent quite a bit of time searching for a caddy to hold my Momentus XT when I replaced it as a boot drive with a Force GT. From a fitment and price standpoint, I don’t think you can beat the deal on this caddy.

iFixit has an optical drive replacement guide. You only need to follow about half the steps in that guide:

    1) Remove the bottom of the laptop
    2) Unscrew three mounting screws on optical bay. I highly recommend using a magnetic screwdriver for this step. You DO NOT want to drop those little screws down the front side of the optical drive.
    3) Unscrew the black harness on the optical drive surface (2 small screws).
    4) Remove the silver foam block.
    5) Remove the drive by lifting the edge closest to the front of the laptop up and slide the drive toward the front of the machine. Be careful to gently raise the black wire harness out of the way.
    6) Remove the back end mounting point from the optical drive and mount it on the caddy.
    7) Reverse the process to re-assemble.

The whole job took me about 10 minutes.

Fits Snugly in MBP, November 21, 2011

Bought this item after all the reviews lamenting that the other caddies didn’t fit.

Was quite pleased when everything fit snugly into my early 2011 MBP. Installation took a bit (requiring careful review of the ifixit teardown instructions) but was worth it in the end. Now I have a nice 750GB drive to supplement my tiny SSD boot drive.

Been using the caddy for a few weeks now, and everything is just awesome.
