I agree with the previous reviewer: If you get it put on correctly, the protector is completely invisible, no air bubbles, scuffs, or rainbow/oil slick effect under certain light. Tactile and touch experience is perfect…unlike some of those thick skins that you have to use a soapy solution to apply them. I also can’t say this of all non-soap protectors, that’s for sure. Rainbow effects are all too common a complaint. And for the price of these Halos, this is a bargain. Someones does need to remove that photo that indicates there are four protectors when actually only three are included in the package.

As the screen protector applying veterans among us know all too well, all of these films attract dust particles when you’re trying to apply them. The best tip I’ve ever received which addresses this problem is to apply the protector while sitting in a steamy bathroom (turn the shower on full hot). I was skeptical, but sure enough, the steam in the air removes floating dust particles. So this makes it much easier to apply without having to wrestle with removing those particles from under the protector. But if that isn’t convenient, then there is nothing more useful than a can of compressed air and a couple pieces of 3M Scotch transparent (matte) tape. Use one to lift the corner of the protector and the other to dab the inside of the protector. It grabs that little dust particle and now the protector will lay down flat.

Also, be sure to use an good glass or screen cleaner before applying, to remove any oils from the screen, especially around the button, even if there was previously a screen protector on it that you’re replacing. Then use the soft cloth to buff it shinny.

If you ever have the problem of the protector not laying down at the edges, it means it’s too close or over the edge of the screen and cannot make a full seal. You have to reposition the protector so it’s perfectly centered all around.

The previous reviewer said to be aware that the black label marked “Step 2 REMOVE ME” is stuck to the protector very tightly, and if you don’t pull it off gently enough it will leave a permanent mark on the protector. I didn’t have this issue. Actually, I accidentally pulled of “Step 2” before “Step 1”, so I was left with no “handle” on the protector. I just had to drop it down the best I could, then went in with a piece of tape to grab the end. So I was then able to lift it up again and align it perfectly, and didn’t have to waste a protector.

There is an instructional video that Halo has on their website. Just google: halo screen protector instructional video, and it will be the first on the search list. Although I never do it that way, at least not all the way. It seems I always need to lift it up again to get it perfectly centered, and need to use a piece of tap to grab a corner of the protector.

Anyway, look no further. These are great protectors. Only wish they’d make some back protectors for the the iPhone 5, for those of us who have bumper-style cases. I prefer a matte finish for the back protector, since acuity isn’t important and the matte finish does not show finger prints as readily.

BTW: for full disclosure, on the package they said under a limited promotion, that they’d send me another TWO packs free if I left a review online. I wouldn’t bother doing this if I didn’t like them and wanted more, of course.

    Good luck!

High quality, relatively easy to apply but not for matte-haters, September 22, 2012

I’ve used/tried over a dozen different screen protectors over the years and the quality and feel of these protectors (which were conveniently available for the iPhone 5 before it was officially delivered) is among the best. I look for six things when it comes to protectors:

    1) Cutout precision: The cutouts are just right – close enough to cover the right areas but not so close that it’s impossible to apply them perfectly. Nothing inappropriate is covered (with the very slight exception of the front light sensor which arguably is OK to cover up) which is impressive considering they had to manufacture these based on rumors and leaks instead of an actual iPhone 5

    2) Anti-fingerprint properties: Really good here. Your phone won’t be smudgy

    3) Anti Glare properties: Also really good here. Works in normal sunlight

    4) Extras: you get three in a pack, which is just about right if you’re got a 66% percent batting average like I do with these things. You get a small cleaning cloth, which is adequate. You do NOT get a card to help you push out the bubbles, so slightly disappointing here.

    5) Feel: Like most matte protectors, the feel is really smooth and less “grippy” or “sticky” than perfectly clear protectors.

    6) Application ease: Pretty good – you get the temporary front layer and back layer of film that most of these products have now. They have the right measure of stickiness – enough to stick, but not so much that you destroy the protector if you miss and have to reposition. Note: given that the iPhone 5’s construction now has the metal frame bezel coming up to the very edge of the glass (which is different than the 4 and 4S which had uncovered glass edges), you have les smargin for error for applying protectors. If you’re off by a little bit on the edge, you’ll get a bubble because the protector will ride up on the bezel. Obviously, this isn’t the fault of the protector (and it’s a small price to pay for the iPhone 5’s improved feel and resistance to shattering due to a sideways drop).

    7) Clarity: This is where every matte protector has disappointed me and this one’s no exception. You get some dimming, some moire patterns, and some slight fuzziness to the display coming through – these protectors are no better or worse than others in this regard. It’s the price you pay for anti-glare and anti-fingerprints. This doesn’t bother my wife at all but it bugs me when I know that I’m not getting the full sharpness and beauty of the Retina Display (especially when it comes to small type).

So overall, if you value anti-glare and anti-fingerprints the most, consider this a five star review. If you value display clarity, consider this a three star review. For me, I’ll keep this protector gladly until i find a perfectly clear one that has some decent fingerprint resistance (I’ve only found one manufacturer that’s pulled off that combination and they haven’t made an iPhone 5 one yet).

UPDATE: Just found the CLEAR / non-matte version of this protector in Amazon for the iPhone 5. I either missed it before or it just hit the store. Will definitely try that!

Good product but may require a few attempts to apply successfully, October 2, 2012

It’s a good thing you get three of these screen protectors in one package. The first two ended up in the trash because this product is pretty finicky to apply and air bubbles and other imperfections are common. (Then again, it doesn’t help that I’m a perfectionist.) The third application was successful and there is now nothing that distinguishes my iPhone 5 with the new screen protector from a factory-fresh one without. The protector is completely invisible, no air bubbles, no scuffs, no shimmering rainbow / oil slick effect under artificial light. There’s also no effect on the tactile experience of using the iPhone (feels the same as before), and no effect on how the phone tracks and translates your button pushes or finger gestures. So, perfect.

While you apply them, these films tend to attract dust particles, so again, you may not get lucky the first time around. One of the three protectors I received also had a slight alignment issue between the protector itself and the peel-away covers, so that it was impossible, by sight, to fit the protector accurately over the three openings on the front of the iPhone. Also be aware that the black label marked “Step 2 REMOVE ME” is stuck to the protector very tightly, and if you don’t pull it off gently enough it will leave a permanent mark on the protector. Easy does it.

What ultimately helped the most was an instructional video that Halo (the manufacturer) has posted on YouTube. Turns out that you’re best off to not peel away layer 1 completely before applying the protector. Peel it off halfway, then gently and slowly pull it back from the underside of the protector as you push down and flatten the top with the side of a credit card.

It may also help to put the iPhone in a clamp while you do this, or to have someone else press the phone down, because both your hands will already be occupied and the phone will have a tendency to shift a little under the pressure you apply with the credit card.

    Hope this helps!
