Great battery life but could be designed better, January 1, 2009

I brought this a while ago and it’s been installed in my iPod 5.5 Gen 80GB for about 3 months. I don’t know specifically how it compares with Apple’s original battery because I don’t use my iPod as often and before this battery I listened to music. Now I watch videos, mostly. It’s 850 mAh.

It’s got great battery life. It does not lose its charge after sitting unused for 2-3 weeks like the original battery (normal, says Apple) so I suppose it has greater capacity.

The con: The battery has a plastic sticker wrapped around it with some info on it. If you rip this plastic wrap off, your warranty (1 year?) is void. Now, for my 80GB, there was no way the ribbon cable was long enough to reach into its little socket deep enough for the latch to lock it in place unless I ripped off the plastic to free an extra centimeter of ribbon. I remember twisting it every which way (and sweating bricks) but there’s really no way. I don’t see this battery giving out anytime soon though.

The opening tools are pretty good, just be gentle and have patience.

… it’s just as advertised. The tools included were indeed flimsy but got the job done with a little care. I ordered another such battery from a different seller and had no problems with the installation either. Just be sure to start opening from the left side (the one the Hold switch is closer to, not the one closer to the headphone jack) and work your way carefully around the bottom to the other side.

I have the 80GB iPod Video model–fifth generation. I bought this battery to replace the original battery that finally would no longer charge. The kit came with the battery and two plastic tools. I would have been nice if there had been some instructions, but I watched a video online. I ended up using a small screwdriver to initially pry the top plastic face away from the metal back piece. I then used the larger of the plastic pry tools with the ply facing downward to separate the tabs that hold the two pieces together. Working around the perimeter of the case, it easily separated once I was finished.

I saw the battery inside is easily accessed, and since the new battery comes with the ribbon cable, the old battery is removed with its ribbon cable. The old battery is held in place with some adhesive, so I used the smaller of the two pry tools to leverage it out. I then paid attention to how the battery and cable were oriented and first reinstalled the new battery’s ribbon cable. It’s a little tricky, as it requires pushing the cable into the connector, and since the cable is fairly flexible, I had to get close to the end with my fingers. The cable will want to bend about 1/4″ from the end as it’s being inserted–this is OK. It doesn’t insert very far at all–maybe 1/8″ inch.

Once the cable was inserted, I removed the backing protecting the adhesive on the new battery (I’m glad they provided that) and stuck the battery in place. Then the face plate just snapped back in place. I pressed all around the edges to make sure it was properly secured. Finally, I powered the iPod on, and everything worked! The new battery had about 40% charge, so it was more than enough to power on and confirm everything is great.

I would definitely recommend this product. For very little money, I have years of new life in my iPod.
