I have used several printers, including several all-in-ones, over the years. The three main brands that I’ve owned include HP, Epson and Canon. They each have their own set of perks and qualities, and overall the functionality and quality of printers have steadily improved over the years. I am still slightly partial to HP printers overall, but this Canon printer definitely has many things going for it. Below are some of my main observations.

    **** Look and Build ****

If you are looking for an all-in-one that will help you reduce the clutter in your office or home, then this one is definitely not for you. It weighs over 30 pounds and occupies a significant amount of desktop real estate. It is however a very solidly built and generally very reliable printer.

    **** Setup ****

The setup was relatively straightforward and pain-free. However, some of the more advanced functions are a bit hard to figure out how to do. The user manual is not of much help here.

    **** Connectivity ****

A Wi-Fi printer connection nowadays seems like a must, and most printers that I’ve come across in recent years seem to have it as a standard option. This printer easily found my home network. I also appreciate the fact that it has AirPrint as a standard option. My household is heavily reliant on iOS devices and it feels wonderful to be able to print from any one of them.

    **** Printing ****

This is definitely one of the best features of this all-in-one. The print quality is really high for a printer of this caliber, especially when it comes to photo printing. You can comfortably print pictures up to 8.5 x 11 and get some really astonishing results. However, the color printing uses up a lot of ink, and if you don’t need the prints immediately, getting them printed online is still a much more affordable option.

Printing is also relatively fast, although it takes the printer some good half a minute to wake up for the first print.

    **** Scanning ****

I’ve only scanned a few documents so far and have generally been impressed with results. However, scanning is very slow and be prepared to wait quite a bit to get your pictures digitized.

    **** Fax ****

So far I have not used the fax feature. You would have thought that by now faxing would have gone the way of VHS tapes, but certain professions (I am looking at you medical professionals) still insist on having most of their official documents faxed to them. So it’s a good feature to have for a once-in-a-while faxing need.

    **** Overall Impressions ****

If you are in the market for a powerful all-in-one yet are still budget conscious, then you will not go wrong with buying this device. However, it is really bulky and some of the functions are not as fast and nimble as I would have liked.

Canon, HP, and Epson have all largely perfected ink jet printers and this one certainly represents the Canon brand well. It’s inexpensive, easy to configure, and delivers adequate quality for those looking for a low-cost office printer with minimal print needs. It does text and graphics well but it’s really not designed for photos and high volume output.

The scanner has both a flatbed and auto documnent feeder but it is rather slow compared to more expensive devices. It supposedly offers duplex scanning but that option wasn’t available on the Mac driver when I attempted to scan a document. Copying a document is very easy and there are separate buttons for monochrome and color copies. It also worked seamlessly with Apple’s AirPrint protocol for zero configuration printing from an iPad and iPhone.

The unit is rather bulky and gets bulkier when paper is loaded as it requires having a tray extended out from the printer at all times. That tray can fold up when not in use but it won’t print in that state either. Ink cost should also be a consideration as one set of replacement ink cartridges is about half the cost of the printer. The color inks are all in a single cartridge so if one of the three dries up the entire cartridge will need to be replaced even if the other inks have some life to them.

As with other printers in this segment of the market they are subsidized by the consumable cost, so if you plan to do more high volume work a laser printer might be a better option. I found the cost of ink replacement for this printer to be about the same as its competitors in this segment of the market.

For occasional printing and other light scanning and copying tasks this is a decent printer. But higher volume users may want to look at other options.

This model does not have auto-duplex printing, March 16, 2014

The MX472 printer, scanner, and fax work very well for light home-office use, and wireless connections to several laptops (Windows 7 and Windows 8) was a 30-second snap each, so no issues there. I didn’t get to try it with an iPhone or iPad.

My only and GREATEST issue is that for the price (currently close to $100) this printer does NOT support Auto-duplex printing (automatic two-sided printing). I gave it four stars instead of five because for not much more, you can get an automatic 2-sided printing model (see further below for recommended models). When first advertised, Amazon’s description had a bullet point stating it had auto-duplex printing. This has fortunately been changed. “MANUAL” duplex printing is the ONLY “printer properties” option that comes up on the 472 model, so you have to go through the hassle of turning the paper around and manually re-inserting it in the bottom tray for it to print on the other side. This is a deal-breaker for me since I want to be able to print 2-sided copies from anywhere in the house without having to trek to the office to turn the sheets around. That’s one of the reasons I want a wireless printer in the first place, so I can print from wherever I am and then collect my finished print jobs whenever it’s convenient.

Difference between the Canon Pixma MX452 and MX472:
The only differences I found by reading all the product specs available is that the MX472 has these extra features:

    1) Google Cloud Print: Allows users to print from Gmail and Google Docs on a mobile device, and from Google Chrome browser for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome devices. With Google Cloud Print, you can print from wherever you are, from applications you use every day. You can even share your home and work printers with anyone you choose.

    2) Quiet Mode: This feature lets you print anytime without worrying about disturbing those around you.

3)Creative Park Premium: An exclusive service for users of genuine Canon inks, offering access to photos, templates and more.

4)No USB thumb drive port: The MX472 does not have a front USB port like the MX452 has in the lower left hand front (you can see it if you zoom in on a picture of the MX452). I guess they found out that few people used it.

If you require automatic double-sided printing as I do, I think the best value for the money is the Canon PIXMA MX522 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax or the Canon Office Products MX532 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer (newer model) when Amazon sells them for between $100-$120. I will write a separate detailed review for these printers, but they use the same ink cartridges as the MX452 and MX472.

If you need better photo printing quality, then I would recommend the Canon PIXMA MX922 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax that Amazon sells currently for $120. It uses separate color cartridges that you replace when each separate color is empty, but according to Consumer Reports, the 922 uses much more ink due to that better quality color print.

I ended up buying the Canon MX532 for $119.99 at Fry’s (limited time sale) and couldn’t be happier with it.
