There is a such thing as “too compact” – Black Cable Matters Superspeed 4-Port USB 3.0 hub, October 20, 2013

There always seems to be another peripheral I need to plug-in to my new Dell Windows 8 desktop. Leaning over to figure out what port was free or what device I could live without in the short-term had become a daily ritual. I went hub shopping. I purchased this 4-port 3.0 and a 4-port 2.0 USB hub from different manufacturers.

    Functionality:

The more simultaneous processes you are running that involve this hub, the lower the speed. If you are running two actions, each will not receive half the potential MB/sec., as you might expect, but a fraction less. This reduction in efficiency is more evident when all ports are occupied and is true for every similar product I’ve ever tried.

The 3.0 hub claims to be “backward compatible” with USB 1.0 and 2.0 products. I found this to be the case with two exceptions. One is a portable USB 2.0 camera/scanner, and the other is a HP flash drive more than five years old. Both items work as designed, if plugged directly into a USB 2.0 port on my computer tower.

    Size Matters:

This hub was manufactured primarily for use with laptops, where a short cord is an asset. I have a desktop. You’ve seen the photo in Amazon’s description, but let me give you this hub by the numbers.

    * The plug which goes into the computer will stick out 2″, so it does not always fit well behind the desktop’s tower. In front, that 2″ is easy to bump or rip out.
    * After the first 2″, the cord extends 10″, before resembling a surge-protector in design.
    * The rectangular body of the hub is 5.5″ long, 1.25″ wide, and 0.8″ high.
    * The 4 ports are in a single line, separated by 0.75″, which is not ideal for peripherals with bulky adapters.
    * A blue pinhead-size light indicates if the hub is operational.

For use of this Cable Matters 3.0 black hub with a desktop, I suggest the additional purchase of…

    AmazonBasics USB 3.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable (6.5 feet/2.0 meters)

An Indispensable Accessory. Cable Matter’s 4-Port USB Extension: A Critical Review., June 10, 2013

I thought I owned all of the accessories I needed, but for some reason I’ve totally missed owning a multi- usb extension.

    ***
Cable Matters’ “Portable 4-Port USB Hub” is an excellent, and I mean excellent accessory to have.

    It features:
    A 4-Port USB 3.0 (backwards compatible) hub that encased in a case that’s approximately 5.5″ x 1.5″ x 1″ and weighs less than a lb.

The connecting cable (with a usb head) is only 12″ long. This makes it ideal for a laptop but a bit too short, ideally, for a desktop considering that you’d want the main part to be situated in front of your computer.

    ***
My main computer is an iMac I bought a year ago. The iMacs come with four (4) USB ports. That is to say it’s a mess behind my computer where all of the plugs, speakers and other peripherals are plugged in.

So, four usb outlets is not nearly enough.

    *** Testing ***
After testing this out for a week, one of the first things you notice is that it really frees up space around your desk.

If you use it just for the peripherals that you constantly plug in and out, you’ll quickly appreciate this handy device.

    *** Recommendation ***
For this particular port, I’d recommend that it be used as an accessory primarily for laptop use. Although, if you have a desktop with a free usb outlet out front, this would make it the ideal location for the hub.

It’s also recommended that these kinds of ports–not just the Cable Matters– you use it for usb 2.0 because it draws a lower power consumption.

All in all, even with all of the ports used, I didn’t notice any drag on my computers performance.

This is a must-have, there’s no question about it.

Solves a ton of problems, February 11, 2014

I recently got a new HP Omni 10 Tablet. Like all tablets, it has limited storage capacity. In my case 32GB. I added a 64GB Micro SDXC card for additional storage, but that ins not like having a 500GB HDD. Also, it only has one Micro USB connector. I’m an underwater photographer and I usually travel with a full blown laptop which can easily download my daily photos from the camera’s SDXC card to it’s HDD for an entire trip.

I wanted to reduce my weight by traveling with only a tablet, but could not save all my files to it because of the limited storage capacity. So, I thought, can I use a hub to connect an external drive and a card reader? I searched high and low for products that would solve my problem and came upon this Hub/Card Reader combination. My tablet supports USB 3.0, but only has the standard USB 2.0 type connector.

I found I could plug an external USB 3.0 HDD into it using an adapter from standard USB to Micro USB so I knew the USB 3.0 HDD would work. The Cable Matters unit is USB 3.0. When I received the unit I plugged it into my adapter, connected it’s external power supply, connected my external HDD to one of it’s USB ports and then inserted a SDXC card with photos on it. My tablet recognized all the hardware. I was able to copy and move files from the memory card to the HDD without putting them on my tablet. I was able to access the files on the HDD and the SD card on the tablet.

Finally I said, what the heck, and plugged the transmitter/receiver for a wireless mouse into the hub and the tablet immediately recognized it. Everything operated perfectly.

Well, looks like the laptop will stay home on my next trip and my tablet, hub/reader, and external HDD will go instead. Much more convenient for me.

I hope this has been helpful. Please send questions if you have any.
