Great Design & Build Quality; My New Mobile Favorite, November 26, 2013

I was not expecting much when I ordered these headphones. However, I was seriously impressed. As a consultant, I am very often on the phone in my car. I always had an issue using bluetooth speakers, bluetooth headphones, or the headphones that Apple includes with the Iphone. They simply did not keep enough of the ambient noise out and this was very irritating and I would find myself talking very loudly. Those days are gone.

The Belking PureAV’s come nicely packaged and are very easy to open unlike some other brands where I had to struggle. On first touch, you will likely feel the outstanding build quality. Wires are thicker and coated with thicker rubber. They also have a substantial feel unlike most ear buds I am used to. The jack that goes into the phone is angled and heavily reinforced. The design quality is also oustanding. For example, in what is a new approach (at least for me), Belkin angles the ear buds. I found this unusual at first. However, after repeated use, it makes so much sense. The buds stay in my ear and the angle seems to help keep ambient noise out and they are extremely comfortable. While others may not like the slightly shortened cord, I did. I found many other brands/models provided far too much cord. Between the build quality (thicker) and shortened cord length, tangling is reduced and nearly eliminated. Regardless, the cord is sufficient length for all my uses including when I am very active. I found the microphone to be perfectly located though this may be more person specific due to physical user characteristics and placement. The inline microphone and multi-funtion remote worked flawlessly with an Apple Iphone 4s and Iphone 5s. Belkin does not provide a case. But, they do provide a good selection of silicone buds that seem to fit everyone in my house.

Unlike earphones dedicated to communicating, the sound on these headphones perform at a much higher level. They are great for listening to music, but will obviously not compete with $100 headphones or ear buds dedicated to that purpose. The Bass is far better than expected as is treble and I did not experience any “muddled” sound (clarity was great). Movies, music, and audiobooks sound fantastic. However, these headphones excel at communications. When on the phone, the calls are so clear now (even on an Iphone on the ATT network), I almost cannot believe what I was missing. They block ambient noise far better than any other ear budsI have ever owned in this class and price range. People I speak with say they can clearly hear me with minimal background noise, even when my windows are open while driving. I really cannot over emphasize the improvement when talking on the phone. A good example- I was recently in a very loud and crowded environment and had to take a call and could not get out of that environment. These headphones came through. I could hear the caller clear as day and they only had a minor issue hearing me over the crowd. I resolved the issue by raising the microphone toward my mouth.

These are my new favorite headphones for communicating on my phone and general listening (music, podcasts, books, movies) when on the go. For quality listening when not on the go, I typically use Monster DNA’s.

I am an earphone connoisseur and collector, as I listen to almost everything through ear buds. I also am a frequent buyer of ear buds as my dog likes to chew them if they’re not put away properly.

These earbuds definitely achieve a higher sound quality than others I’ve used. I haven’t tried the microphone.

I just wish the packaging were a little more informative. The only insert is a very tiny square of information that’s buried in the box. The insert makes reference to different sizes of earbud tips, but I never found any. It would be helpful to include the information on the box regarding what was included and where to find it. The earbuds are a little large for me so I would have liked a smaller option; they sometimes fall off my ears, which can be disconcerting. .

Buyer Beware! Decent earbuds, but right earbud went dead after ~15 days and <20hours of use!, January 31, 2014
    By
    Pouts

Got these as a gift during the holidays. I really liked them at first. My ears have a small tragus so the gap where earbuds would normally sit is particularly wide on me, which makes it hard to find earbuds that fit. The angled design and exchangeable sizes of the rubber portion on these worked pretty well as long as I wasn’t exercising/moving around a lot. I was fairly satisfied with the fact that they fit, along with the decent sound quality (ok bass, maybe not as crisp/clear as others, but good), and that it had a microphone. I would have given them ~4/5 stars if this performance continued.

Unfortunately, after <1 month and easily <15-20hrs of use, the right earbud suddenly died. I tried it in multiple devices, looked for signs of damage (or even wear and tear) and I couldn’t identify why they would stop working. The headphones had sat alone in a side pocket of my bookbag for the majority of their life, neatly wrapped in a circle about 4 fingers wide. My point is that this was clearly a product malfunction. I contacted tech support on the Belkin website and customer support over the phone. Adding the time it took to find tech support/customer support, wait times, and time spent with the various representatives, I spent a little less than 2 hours time.

Although everyone was courteous, per company policy, they insisted that I call the person who gifted me the headphones for a receipt, and that I pay for the shipping the defective pair to them. I am now forced to awkwardly call my friend, “Hey remember those headphones you gave me? Thanks for that and all, but…” Additionally, I have to figure out how much it costs to ship these things back to the company to decide if it’s even worth it (Customer support was no help in estimating shipping costs that I may incur). Ironically, given the amount of company resources consumed in this whole process, Belkin probably could have saved themselves money just by giving me the replacements initially.

In any case, it appears the majority of people were satisfied with this purchase… however, you should beware (especially if you are buying these as a gift) that these headphones may malfunction and it’s a big hassle to get them replaced. For what it’s worth, this is the first Belkin device I’ve owned and the process has left me with a poor impression of their support services.
