Wow! A thirty dollar HDMI cable with Mini Displayport adapter!

Well, clearly the pricing for this was taken as great value compared to Apple, the leader in gouging for stuff like this. Certainly, Apple would charge $30 and not give you the nice HDMI cable to go with the MDP-HDMI adapter. So, compared to that this is a good deal. My normal setup to connect my Macbook to a 24″ external monitor uses an integrated MDP to HDMI with 6 foot cable. For a fixed setup, this is the way to go, in my opinion. What the Belkin offers is the ability to stuff a small adapter in your “go” bag and connect to other HDMI setups, such as home theater or hotel room TVs, while on the road. SO, decent value, but if you are just looking to connect to your new monitor or TV at home, consider getting the all-in-one as I did. It is less expensive and has one less connector (Kanex, among other vendors).

Now, I did actually test it. I used my late 2009 Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion and a Dell 24″ LCD with the appropriate HDMI connection. All worked fine. The nice, slim HDMI pod gets only pleasantly warm (remember, MDP adapters for Apple all have active electronics in them unless they are MDP-MDP, which means you actually bought a nice Apple display!). The cable has a high quality feel and didn’t have any noxious odor from some toxic cheapo vinyl or anything. It looks high quality. It’s thicker than the Kanex that I had previously, but it still coils OK.

The packaging did not require tools to open and is recyclable.

Overall, if you can get a good price on it, great stuff. I only took off one star because I think it would be killer at $22. The alternative, which I have tested in the past, is the Kanex MDP-HDMI adapter, which is $15 on Amazon. The integrated with cable version is close to $20. This set is $42 list and $32 sale price, which is just too high for the provided value. That said, if you get close to $20, go for it because it is versatile and good quality.

The overall cable is well constructed. The end are terminated cleanly. The feel of the cable is nice, if not as smooth or as flexible as some HDMI cables I own. Not an issue though.

The purpose of this cable is for use with the mini displayport to HDMI. And for that purpose it works well. One thing I like about this cable is that it comes in two pieces that fit snuggly together… if you are in need of a pure HDMI cable (HDMI on both ends) you can take off the piece with the HDMI (female) to mini displayport (male) and use the cable as just a pure HDMI cable. This is an expensive approach if that is your only need, but gives you great flexibility in a pinch. The overall price seems to be high. You can shop for better.

One small note, the cable actually came with a couple page instruction sheet which described how to make changes on Windows and Mac systems to enable sound through HDMI cables. The booklet was simple and concise.

A little pricey, watch out for interference with TV remotes, June 29, 2013

I’ve been using a Kanex adapter to hook my MacBook Pro laptop to my TV. It has worked well for the past couple of years. I got this Belkin for our little guest cottage TV. It works fine and seems a little more robust in terms of build than the Kanex. I do have three minor caveats. One, if you want to hook this adapter to a longer non-Belkin cable, you’re likely going to have to cut away the thin plastic sheath on the Belkin HDMI end. It’s easy to do with a scissors. Two, the Belkin cable costs considerably more than the Kanex. Three, unlike the Kanex, this unit does emit enough of an IR signal to interfere with your TV remote control if it is live and near your TV. I’d keep it unconnected while not in use.
