Solid, reliable cord at a reasonable price, but beware of where you buy it from, July 18, 2013

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)
SECOND UPDATE: Note the most recent comments below. It appears that my suspicion is right, and some of the sellers of this cable are marketing a knock-off product, not the real Belkin cable. It’s a real pity that Amazon is allowing anybody to sell on their pages. It’s not fair to consumers, it’s not fair to the good third-party sellers, and its not fair to companies like Belkin whose reputation is harmed by it. I haven’t always been happy with Belkin products, but this one is great. So, to repeat: DO NOT just add this to your cart without selecting “Amazon.com” as the seller. They don’t always have this in stock, and they aren’t always the cheapest my a large margin (another clue something is up) so the default seller you get when you hit “buy” usually won’t be Amazon.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: There seem to be more and more people finding that the “Belkin cable” is not working after an iOS update. Having a cable fail after an OS update is indicative of a knock-off reverse-engineered cable, not a poorly built one. Apple uses iOS updates to update the Lightening firmware to intentionally stop working with unlicensed cables. As such, I suspect that the people who are having trouble with the cable bought theirs from a third party seller offering a fraudulent product. To be safe, if you buy this, I highly recommend only buying it from Amazon, if they are still offering it. As a further update, I continue to have no problems with my cable after using it nearly daily for many months.

Normally I’d say a cord is a cord, but not so with Apple lightning cords. Apple, in its infinite greed–I mean wisdom–has decided to put an authentication chip in every Lighting cable. This means that for a third party to design and build a cable they either need to (a) pay royalties to Apple or (b) attempt to reverse engineer the Apple chip. From experience reading the forums on this, you definitely want to go with a reputable company that chose route (a). So, if you’re wondering why these cables are expensive, you can blame Apple, not Belkin. Belkin did a great job with these, and relative to other legitimate Lighting cables, they really aren’t that expensive. And for the money you’re getting a quality cable. These are solid, with thick rubber at the terminals to keep the cord from cracking.

You may be tempted to buy one of the knock-off cables, but consider yourself warned: they are likely to not work out of the box for functions other than charging (if that), and they are almost certain to stop working when Apple updates the firmware of the phone periodically. Either pay a cable from Apple, or from a reputable company like Belkin. I haven’t tried them all, so I can’t say these are the absolutel best, but I can say I recommend these without reservation as they are the best I’ve tried, and rival Apple cables in quality.
