It’s really not as bad as they say., March 13, 2006

I opted for the wireless keyboard and mouse when I bought my new iMac a couple months ago, and have been happy with the decision.

I’m a slacker, do-nothing type who sits in front of the computer all day, and when I’m away, my husband fills those shoes. I didn’t replace the batteries in the mouse until today, and have yet to change the batteries in the keyboard. I don’t know what people are doing to run through their batteries so fast (cough*pron*cough), but 6+ hours/day for two months without a battery switch is a pretty good rate for me.

Also, I have to beg to differ on one more topic: the wireless mouse DOES HAVE TWO-BUTTON CAPABILITIES! Either hold down the mouse about a half second longer, while clicking, to bring up the right-button options; or, for a quicker response, hold down the control button while clicking. It may not have the actual two-button design, but it does the job, and it does so without crumbs between unnecessary buttons.

My one problem is that it doesn’t appear to have a scroll feature, though I may just not know of it yet. I won’t start hopping up and down, screaming crazy mumbo jumbo, though, until I know for sure. That’s just one of the perks of being a rational human being, which I enjoy daily while clicking away at my wireless mouse.

Perhaps you would enjoy this, too.

This mouse looks great, goes perfect with the rest of my Mac setup and is enough to get me by. But apart from the looks, this mouse does not really have a lot more going for it. In fact, it has several drawbacks:

    – Only one button and no scroll wheel. This is a known drawback of all Apple mice. The right-click is really useful and allows you to work faster. But beyond that, the fact that the entire front part of the mouse is the actual button makes it a little hard to control when dragging items.

    – Poor battery life. I use my Mac an average of 5 hrs a day, and I have had to replace the batteries every couple of weeks. I tried to use rechargable batteries but they only last a few days.

    – Slow response. While you are tracking, the response actually isn’t bad. But when you stop and try to move the mouse again, there is a small delay before it actually starts to move. This is probably no big deal for business applications, but trying to play a fast paced FPS game with it is no fun.

    – Small. I have average sized hands and I find the mouse a little too small for comfort. It’s nothing I can’t get used to, but a larger size would make my experience a lot more enjoyable. I also own a Logitech MX700 mouse that I use with my Windows PC and the level of comfort is beyond comparison.

I love Apple and most of the products they make, but I hope they get their act together and release a decent line of mice once and for all!

UPDATE: I have two apple Computers in my home with a Bluetooth mouse each. Over the past eight months I’ve had to replace both of them twice because they just stop working all of a sudden. Stay away from this product and save yourself a headache.

Yea, it looks cool, and matches the ibook (not so much my PowerBook) and the style of the rest of the apple line, but all in all, the only thing good about this mouse is that its wireless. The batteries run out at least once a month, and it only has one button. It integrates well with the computer and works great, but Id rather opt for a two-button, scroll wheel mouse that doesnt match my desktop. If you’re willing to spend $69 on a cool looking mouse (this mouse used to be $69), check this one out ([…] Happy clicking!
