Easy to use, though I wish the cable was more flexible, January 23, 2013

I use this adapter with my 15″ MacBook Pro with Retina display. We have also used it with my wife’s three year old MacBook Pro, and it can be used with any Mac with either Mini DisplayPort slots (obviously!) or Thunderbolt slots (which double as Mini DisplayPort for the purposes of this adapter). While it seems a little expensive, this adapter is convenient and easy to use for anyone with a Mac who wishes to stream the internet to their TV or connect to a projector when giving a presentation. Certainly, it is just as easy to use an HDMI cable for the former, but most places I give presentations at still use VGA to connect to the projector making this adapter a necessity when traveling!

As soon as I plug a VGA cable into the adapter, my computer recognizes the new display. Aside from the usual resolution and mirroring settings that need to be changed in System Preferences, the cable is ready to go as soon as you connect it. It is a simple device, and it simply works!

Unfortunately, this adapter shares a design flaw with one of its siblings, the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, in addition to presenting one other more minor annoyance. What I think is a design flaw is that the cabling between the two connection ends is rather stiff and less flexible that I would like. This is important to me because I use this adapter in many different settings, not all of which have a lot of desktop real estate, either due to being a podium or due to restrictions on the VGA cable direction and length. I wish that the cable was a little more flexible so that the adapter would wrap better to accommodate these occasionally tight constraints, and also to relieve pressure on the Thunderbolt slot. The adapter, like the ethernet adapter I mentioned fit a little loosely in their slots and while I have yet to have a problem with them pulling or falling out while in use, I would rather they bent enough to relieve an potential strain.

If you find yourself needing to connect to a VGA cable, this is the adapter for you. Plug and play and off you go! (as an added bonus, it is attractive – though this is not really a reason to buy any particular device, we all do it!)

It takes a little DisplayPort on a Mac Mini and provides an interface to connect a standard VGA monitor to it. I used it to connect our Mac Mini to an older 19 inch LCD monitor (5×4 aspect ratio) and didn’t have any issues.

I bought the genuine Apple model since I had read a few reviews about the off-brand units not quite measuring up as far as quality and compatibility were concerned. Knowing Apple, I don’t find it hard to believe,

Otherwise, this little adapter works fine and I can’t find any reason not to recommend it to others.

By “party,” I mean conference. Most conferences that I attend provide a cable to connect a PC to the projector, but not a Mac, so if you have this cable, you will be extremely popular with all of the people that didn’t realize that Macs come with a bring-your-own-connectors requirement at most places. This little device has improved my self-esteem by leaps and bounds since I bought it a few months ago. For a double self-esteem boost, get the iPad/iPhone VGA connector. You’ll be surrounded by adoring fans (aka desperate presenters without the necessary adapters).
