This review is on Anker Astro3 second generation 12000 mAh black battery pack. This battery pack is a real powerhouse of energy and in my test results it performed extremely well in supplying a charging current to an iPad 3 and an iPhone 4. It is also designed to allow you to charge three items at the same time. I also tested the battery pack charging and iPad 3 and an iPhone 4 simultaneously. It comes with an Apple 30 pin connector and other accessories that you need to make it more useful. You may need to use your original charging cables for some devices so take them with you if you need them.

It is a great power resource to keep your USB recharged devices operating on those long work or school days or while you are traveling. This battery pack is a powerful source of power and many people like me are power users of their smart phones and tablets and need a battery like this. If you are constantly using your phone or tablet then you know that they will run out of power sometime during the day or evening. If you are not near an AC wall outlet with your charger or in your car with a charger what can you do? It is especially important to have some way to recharge if you are traveling in a plane, in the middle of a school classroom or on a bus or train. In addition many of the newer tablets are real power hungry devices and it takes a lot to recharge them.

Here is a powerful battery pack with three USB ports. It can charge your tablet devices or charge your smart phone and if you want it can do both of them simultaneously. I charged two iPhones at the same time in my testing. One Smart USB output port is rated at 5 VDC and 2.4 Amps and the other two are rated at 5 VDC and 2 Amps. It uses Lithium-Ion battery technology and carries a 12000 mAh capacity. It can output a total of 4 Amps at one time and this is the highest battery pack output that I have seen in my testing so far. This is a large sized battery pack and it weighs in weighs in at 10 1/2 ounces. This battery pack will fit easily into a brief case, back pack or a computer bag or a large purse. I have included a video of the battery’s features and I hope it is helpful to you.

Here are the output details for the two ports based upon the type of device you are trying to charge:

    Type of product—————–Smart Port——Universal Port
    iPad IOS 5 and above———-2.4 Amps——–1.5 Amps
    iPad below IOS 5—————-2.4 Amps——–N/A
    iPhone IOS 5 and above——-1 Amp————½ Amp
    iPhone below IOS 5————1 Amp————N/A
    Android Phones—————–1.5 Amps——–1.5 Amps
    Android Tablets—————–2 Amps———–2 Amps
    Samsung Galaxy Tablets——2 Amps———–N/A
    Other cellphones—————1.5 Amps——–1.5 Amps

When I test a battery I do an extensive set of tests that fully charges the battery and then I use it to charge devices and make sure that it is fully depleted when my tests are done. I time each test and document the results as the test progresses. I then calculate the mAh of capacity that the battery supplied and I then calculate its charging efficiency. This process takes from 3 hours to, in very large batteries, about a day for testing. I don’t take any short cuts or guess and every battery has these tests performed on it and documented. This is to assure that the battery is tested and it performs well. If a battery has performed poorly I then run the tests again to verify the results.

    What’s in the box?

    * The Anker Astro3 second generation 12000 mAh black battery pack
    * The battery pack comes with an instruction manual
    * The battery does not come with an AC wall charger. Use the Micro USB charging tip for charging the battery. You can use a computer USB 2.0 port to charge the battery pack but it is 12000 mAh and it will take between 24 to 26 hours. The manual states to use a 1.5 Amp USB wall charger and it will take 8 hours but I recommend using a 2.1 amp AC wall charger if you have one.
    * One charging cable for the battery pack or your smart devices. It is 11 inches long.
    * An Apple 30 pin connector adapter.
    * A nice carrying bag

If you are looking for a good Lightning cable to use with this battery here is one released by Anker that works very well with my iPad Air and iPhone 5S.

    [Apple MFi Certified] Anker® Lightning to USB Cable 3ft / 0.9m for iPhone 5s / 5c / 5, iPad Air / mini / mini2, iPad 4th generation, iPod 5th generation, and iPod nano 7th generation

This is a very good product and below I have listed its features and benefits as well as my test data for your review. Please take the time to quickly watch the video and if you have any questions send me a comment and I will try to help you.

This review is from: Anker® 2nd Gen Astro3 12000mAh (4A Output) Portable Charger Triple USB External Battery Pack with PowerIQ™ Technology for iPhone 6, 5S, 5C, 5, 4S, iPad Air, mini, Galaxy S5, S4, S3, Note 3, 4, Galaxy Tab 3, 2, Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10, HTC One, One 2 (M8), PS Vita and other Smartphones and Tablets (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Yes, another external battery. No, this one is like nothing I have ever tested from Anker or anybody else. It’s not a surprise Anker became one of my favorite companies to review new products from because they are constantly introducing something new and/or improved. That is the only way to stay on top of the game and to earn the top rating of your customers.

First of all, even with it’s 12000 mAh capacity, this new 2nd gen Astro shrank up in size down to 110 mm x 83 mm x 26 mm which fits very comfortably and feels very nice with its soft touch rubbery finish in your hand. At close to 10 oz in weight you will feel it for sure in your pocket, although it’s slick design is very portable and with included mesh pouch is easy to carry around in your bag/purse/backpack or even pants pocket, as long as you are not wearing skinny jeans :) In contrast to most of the today’s external batteries with dual output, Astro 3 comes with 3 independent full size usb outputs that deliver a whooping 4A of combined current. I checked it by charging Note 2, S4, and Nexus 7 simultaneously and was able to confirm that right on a dot. N2 was charging at about 2A, S4 at about 1A, and N7 at about 1A as well. I was actually timing and monitoring the percentage of battery change, not just relying on Current Charge app. These 3 usb charging outputs are actually partitioned into one Smart output (intended for Apple devices and other android devices) and two Universal outputs which are specifically designed to charge Android devices at maximum speed. There is some custom circuit which determines max speed and optimizes output correspondingly. I also noticed the safety nature of this circuit prevented me from charging both N2 and S4 at 2A each from Universal outputs where N2 was charging at 2A and S4 at 1A, leaving 1A for Smart output, thus confirming it’s not a bulk current sharing between all 3 ports. The input port, micro-usb, for charging Astor 3 is actually a fast 1.5A input which is great since it charges this external battery at 1.5x times faster rate.

While you charging the battery itself or using to charge other devices, another huge improvement in the design is a circular 10-segment indicator with granularity of 10%. You no longer have to rely on a typical 4-segment led. This one will give you a more precise reading, although it might take you a little while to get used to figuring out on a spot the exact percentage by counting segments before light times out. Once the light turns off, it’s a clean surface design with no leds or buttons. So how do you turn it on or verify led count? Yet another cool innovation, just do a shake of the battery and indicator circle turns on to reveal number of active segments. I really like that motion activated switch, makes it very unique. But trust me, it’s not the most unique part of this new Astro 3 design. As I mentioned in a number of my previous reviews, the labeled capacity of the battery is not what you actually get. It’s the capacity of the cells inside of external battery when it has to be converted to 5V usb interface at the output and then back from 5V to 3.7V inside of the phone. During this conversion ALL external batteries loose anywhere between 30%-35% of its capacity. Well, this new 2nd gen Astro 3 is optimized to a much higher efficiency. I have tested it and can confirm it provides the actual charging capacity of 10,044 mAh, which means a loss of only 16%!!! Basically, the internal battery circuit has been optimized to provide a more efficient output. I have tested a lot of external batteries, and this is the first one I have seen at such high efficiency.

Overall, I was very impressed with a design and features of this battery, especially with how efficient it’s output. For $49.99 on Amazon its a great value where it provides the actual capacity output equal to other more expensive batteries labeled at around 14000 mAh. With a high output efficiency, 4A of total combined charging current, triple output, and motion activated 10-segment led indicator – I highly recommend it!

Mainly used with iphone/ipad/kindle – had high expectations, October 12, 2013

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Anker® 2nd Gen Astro3 12000mAh (4A Output) Portable Charger Triple USB External Battery Pack with PowerIQ™ Technology for iPhone 6, 5S, 5C, 5, 4S, iPad Air, mini, Galaxy S5, S4, S3, Note 3, 4, Galaxy Tab 3, 2, Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10, HTC One, One 2 (M8), PS Vita and other Smartphones and Tablets (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I recently purchased this charger and have tried it 3 times now with the below results. The device itself comes with a USB wire that you must use with your own charger. It comes with an adapter for the older iphone/ipad. I have the iphone 5 (1440) and ipad mini (4490 mah) and Kindle keyboard (1750 mah) and have used them in my testing using their own usb adapters. Overall there are 3 usb ports – one smart port and 2 universal ports. The battery comes with a case as well. I will put my opinion at the bottom. All of these test start with the battery at 100%

    First Test
    Iphone 5 – 10-100% (battery at 80%)
    Iphone 5 – 10-100% (battery at 70%)
    Iphone 5 – 9-100% (battery at 50%)
Kindle Keyboard 0-100% (battery at 20%)
    Iphone 5 – 9-87% (dead)

Final Result 8071.6 which is 67% of the 12000 mah

    Second
    Iphone 5 – 9-100% (80%)
    Ipad mini 10-100% (30%)
    Iphone 5 10-100% (20%)
    Iphone 5 10-77% (dead)

Final Result 7612.2 which is 63% of the 12000 mah

    Third
    Iphone 5 – 5-100% (80%)
    Ipad mini – 10-100% (30%)
    Iphone 5 5-100% (20%)
    Iphone 5 8-77% (dead)

Final Result 7770.6 which is 64.8% of the 12000 mah

Overall, the devices charged as if they were plugged into the normal chargers. I had high expectations with most of the reviewer’s stating they were getting high 70 to low 80% of the 12000 mah. I am not sure if it has more to do with the lightning charger for the iphone 5 and ipad mini cause more charge to be lost.

A final word about the way that most people test these external batteries. I am not sure that charging a device from 10-50% is the same as charging a device from 60-100% in terms of how many mah it uses. I had high expectations for this device and it charged all of my devices well. It charged multiple devices at the same time without problems but the highest I reached was 67% of the 12000 mah. I think if I had not already read the reviews saying about how they get 80% of the 12000 mah expected then I would have been happier with the device. Once again, the lightning usb cord for the iphone and ipad mini may lose more power during the exchange than other devices. I am neutral in terms of recommending this device over any other external battery.

Would I buy from Anker again? Absolutely, as they have great customer service and their device charged my devices without damaging them. I just won’t have as high of expectations.
