The CS6 Master Collection (Mac OS) box contains two DVD’s and two small pieces of paper, one a registration note, and the other a license agreement. The DVD’s provide everything you need to install nearly all of Adobe’s products – about the only things missing are Digital Editions and Lightroom, which you’ll need to obtain separately. There have been a few changes since CS5 (Soundbooth, for instance, has been replaced by Audition), but those who bought the CS5.5 upgrade will already be aware of some of these changes.

The entire installation went smoothly on my Mac Pro running 10.7.4, and you can activate the products on two computers so that you can easily use them at home and at work (though not simultaneously). The installation did not deactivate or remove my CS5 products, so I had to tend to that separately. Note that Photoshop no longer allows you to run a 32-bit iteration, so if you’ve been used to accessing your scanner through Photoshop, you’ll most likely need to find a workaround.

So what’s different about the Student/Teacher/School Staff version? Absolutely nothing. The box and its contents are identical to the regular version, but you pay half the price. However, you must go through the Adobe approval process, which means that for the serial number to work, you should have a .edu email address along with some evidence of your academic status such as a paystub or ID card.

At the end of the install process, you’ll have Acrobat X Pro, After Effects, Audition, Bridge, Dreamweaver, Encore, Extension Manager, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign, Media Encoder, Photoshop, Prelude, Premiere Pro, and SpeedGrade. What you won’t have is a user’s manual, and I find this outrageous.

I’ve been using Photoshop and Premiere since versions 1.0, but I acknowledge that I have a lack of familiarity with some of the applications installed here. In addition, since I skipped CS5.5, I can’t simply look at the “What’s New since 5.5” document that one can find in the Help links. Adobe has hidden some of their User Guides online – they’re not easy to find and they’re certainly not included on the DVD’s. I was able to find a Using Adobe Audition CS5.5 file – a nice 148 page manual – online, but I couldn’t find an equivalent pdf document for Audition CS6, nor could I find such a document for Illustrator CS6. The manuals should be easily accessible. Frankly, I’d prefer a printed set for handy reference, and given the $800 purchase price, I don’t think that’s much to ask. But I’d take pdf’s if Adobe would only show me where they are.

Otherwise, for those new to the Adobe world, you’re stuck looking for manuals. There are plenty of good ones, of course, such as Scott Kelby’s Photoshop book or Chris Botello’s Illustrator text. But really? I spend this much and I have to buy manuals? At the very least, the lack of manuals makes it difficult to review the product. How do I even know I tried everything? Maybe I missed a capability because of a non-intuitive interface.

Here’s what I know: all the software runs, nothing crashes, rendering seems faster, HTML5 is supported, Photoshop has video-handling capabilities, Illustrator opens large files much faster than it did previously, and all the software appears to use a gray/black UI. It looks professional and high-tech, albeit low contrast. Acrobat X Pro has a simplified user interface that I find slows me down since necessary tools are buried a few levels down, but I’m sure I’ll figure out ways to speed that up in time.

Why 3 stars for a product which appears to work as intended? A product which in many ways is the product for which Macintosh was originally created? A product which provides the modern day equivalent of MacPaint and MacDraw? Because Adobe should be providing the instructions, just as Audi includes one with every R8 and Porsche with every 911. Sure, someone buying those cars will undoubtedly have driven a car before. A buyer of the Adobe Master Collection likely has been around the block with at least some of the included programs. But I want to know, from the creator, about each of the significant aspects of the product. And I don’t want to spend time hunting through Help screens to find the information. I also think that for the price, Adobe should include Lightroom. Either it’s a Master Collection or it isn’t.

Can’t beat the price of the Student and Teacher Edition. The CS6 version is a dramatic improvement from my last version which was CS2.

Use the whole Adobe CS6 – works great. Good deal for a student and a graphic designer/web designer/video editor/photographer. Kind of stinks that they are switching software updates to the Cloud right after I bought the whole collection, but I’ll get a few good years out of the software.
